Introduction

For this tip, I'll show you four different creature designs that are uncommonly used for their respective creature type.

Creature 1: Vampire

Origin: Romanian Folklore

Everyone knows the vampire, right? Loves blood. Hates sunlight. Makes horrible lovers:

One of their most well known traits is their connection to bats. However, I decided that they should have a connection to a creature that (A) can also suck blood, (B) can carry a lot of nasty diseases, some unknown to man, and (C) everybody hates: the mosquito.

First, I drew a sketch of the creature, referencing photos of mosquitoes to plan out where goes on the body:

Then I refined the sketch, adding the mosquito head and the details:

Here is the final result. Note that some things are different than in the initial sketches:

And here's some design notes on the creature:

If you're upset about how bats aren't used in this design, don't worry; we'll use them shortly.

Creature 2: Succubus/Incubus

Origin: Jewish Religious Folklore

A suc/incubus is a demon (or Faerie, in my case) that takes one's life force while the latter is sleeping. They are usally depicted as very sexy demons, with horns, red skin, and forked tails:

Alas, that form is overrated. So for this interpretation, I want the creature's true form to be as hideous as possible, while still be considered a freak of nature like the last creature.

Rough Sketch:

Cleaned up Sketch, all the while referencing photos of bat heads:

Inked drawing:

Here is how a succubus turns into their true form:

Design notes:

Creature 3:...Elf...

Origin: Germanic Folklore

Yep, you read the heading. I bet this is going through your head while reading this:

However, this is what I think an elf in the real world should look like:

For the elves, I still kept their connections to nature as well as their tendency to be long lived...maybe a little TOO long lived...

Alright. Am I missing anyo-

Creature 4: Night Faeries (AKA [REDACTED])

Origin:1924831rhfusdvhjnfr28094ytfhwu9ptgf34u97t5q47p83u2

Police Report: "This picture was found near a knapsack in the woods. It is believed to be a flattering drawing of the Night Faeries:

"When digging through the knapsack, we found more drawings. Although unreadable, we can at least see what was said.

"r0UUUU3H ssssssssssssssseee3e3e3tch:

"inkinkinkinkinkink1nkinkink:

"There looks to be design notes on this strange being:

"Owner of Knapsack was reported missing a week ago. Will send dispatch to area as soon as possible. End of report."

Conclusion

Chief Police Report: "Yesterday, all of the dispatch, invluding the conductor of the last police report, are either missing or dead. While looking through the missing person's knapsack for more information, I found this illustration sandwiched between the pages..."
