Starting from Clip Studio Paint Ver. 4.0, you can freely draw on Ver. 2 3D drawing figures and 3D primitives.

With 3D drawing figures, you can create outlines of facial features or add patterns to the body. This makes it easier to see how the character looks from different angles or poses and creates a sense of continuity for the characters you often draw.

You can also intuitively draw directly on 3D primitives on a 3D layer such as spheres and other objects, instead of the difficult-to-draw texture maps that have been exported and flattened.

You can draw on 3D drawing figures and 3D primitives using the brush tool.

You can use Pen, Sketch, Brush, Eraser, Airbrush, and Decoration brush tools.

Note:

Some brushes may appear different on the 3D models and some cannot be used.

Sub tools with Color Jitter or Color mixing settings, like the Pointillism brush in the Brush tool or the Glitter brush in the Decoration tool, will not have their settings applied.

The Dot pen brush in the Pen tool cannot be used.

*This feature is available in Studio Mode and unavailable in Simple Mode.

Drawing on 3D Drawing Figures

To place the 3D drawing figure onto the canvas, drag and drop it from the Material palette > 3D > Body shape.

Note:

The line texture you applied to the 3D figure will stretch and shrink with its body shape.

If you want to maintain the line texture, change the body shape before drawing.

It is easier to adjust poses after drawing, as you may want to move and modify the 3D drawing figure during the drawing process.

Draw on the 3D drawing figure using the brush tool. When you switch to a brush tool while selecting a drawing figure, you can begin to draw using your preferred color and brush.

Your drawing is displayed in the visible areas of the canvas.

When drawing on the back or side, switch to the Object sub tool. Then, adjust the angle of the 3D drawing figure using the manipulator or camera to a position that makes it easier to draw.

Switch between the brush tool and the Object sub tool while drawing.

Before drawing on detailed parts like the arms or back, position the 3D drawing figure in a pose that is easy to draw on.

You can erase your drawing all at once by tapping the Erase button with the brush tool selected.

Note:

If you find it difficult to see where you are drawing due to the shadows, turn off Apply light source under Light source in the Sub Tool Detail palette to make drawing easier.

Please refer to this article for information on how to set up shadows and light sources.

Please refer to these articles on how to use 3D drawing figures.

Drawing on 3D Primitives

3D primitives are 3D materials of various shapes. You can use them for creating backgrounds and small objects by combining and adjusting their shapes. You can draw on 3D primitives and use them for wall patterns and small object designs.

Add 3D primitives to the canvas by dragging and dropping them directly from the Material palette > 3D > Primitive.

Using a brush tool with the 3D primitive selected allows you to paint with your preferred colors and brushes, similar to painting on a 3D drawing figure.

Please take a look at this article on how to use 3D primitives.

Please refer to this article for information on creating small objects and backgrounds using 3D primitives.

Rendered 3D Primitive Texture Map

When you export the Map of the 3D primitive from the Sub Tool Detail palette > Export, the exported file will include the rendered content, so you can continue drawing directly onto it.

Please refer to this article for instructions on how to export a map.

Registering painted 3D Materials

You can reuse designs you have drawn onto 3D drawing figures and 3D primitives by registering them as materials. Try registering characters you draw often and from various angles as materials.

Tap on Register Material from the Object Launcher, choose the material name and save destination, then select OK.

  • 3D drawing figure: Register material
  • 3D primitive: Save 3D primitive to Material palette

Note:

When you register a 3D primitive or body shape as a material, the design you registered will remain intact and you can continue drawing on it.

3D image materials registered from the Edit menu > Register material > Image can still be edited after registration.

For details on how to register 3D materials, please refer to this article.
