You can use them not only for submissions to magazines and monochrome manga for doujinshi, but also for monochrome illustrations to easily create manga cover-style illustrations.

Currently, there are over 400 IC SCREEN Digital tones available for CLIP STUDIO PAINT.

About IC SCREEN Digital

IC SCREEN Digital is a digital version of "IC SCREEN," a manga tone provided by G-Too Corporation, which is sold as image material that can be used in CLIP STUDIO PAINT.

IC Screen is one of Tone's most representative brands, loved by many manga artists and illustrators.

In addition to basic patterns such as halftone dots, hatching, and gradations, IC Screen's original delicate patterns, such as buildings, plants, emotional expressions, and delicate floral patterns, are highly regarded.

<POINT>

If you cannot find the [Material] palette, select [Material] → [Download] from the [Window] menu at the top of the canvas to display it.

Let's try using IC SCREEN Digital for monochrome illustrations

Paste the downloaded IC SCREEN Digital onto the line drawing of a monochrome illustration to finish it off.

*The steps have been reconstructed from Deep Blizzard's video.

This time, I used IC SCREEN Digital for the ribbon on IC-chan in the foreground, the uniform of the black-haired girl, and the floral pattern in the background.

Create a selection

Create a selection where you want to apply the tone.

With the [Auto Select] tool → [Reference other layers for selection], click on the ribbon to create a selection.

For more information on how to create a selection, see this article.

*The selection area has been colored green here for ease of understanding.

Apply tone to ribbon

Once you have selected the ribbon, drag and drop the ribbon tone (Y-1639) into the canvas or onto the layer you want to apply the tone to, and the tone will be applied to the ribbon.

If you want to move the pattern of the applied tone, select the tone layer, select the [Object] tool, and drag the tone on the canvas.

<POINT>

IC SCREEN Digital uses a unique method to digitize analog IC SCREEN products (including Use and J Tone).

Please use the original size, as moire may occur if the tones are enlarged or reduced.

Applying tones to uniforms

In the same way, select the uniform part of the black-haired girl and drag and drop the uniform tone (S-5009) onto the canvas.

Suppressing (erasing) tones

There is a technique for scraping (erasing) tones to express light and shadow.

Select the layer mask of the tone layer that you have applied to the canvas.

You can erase tones by selecting the Pen tool or the [Hatching (for tone scraping)] subtool in the [Hatching] group of the [Decoration] tool and painting with a transparent color or erasing with the eraser.

If you erase too much of the tone, you can add more by drawing again with the pen tool or similar.

<POINT>Brushes for scraping tones

CLIP STUDIO ASSETS has many brush materials for scraping tones.

If you want to scrape in a more preferred way, we recommend downloading the materials.

You can scrape more naturally by using a brush for hatching or a sandy scraping brush.

For more information about layer masks and transparency, see this article.

Finishing by toning the areas painted in gray

For parts that will not have patterns, such as the face and body shadows, I'll finish off the illustration by applying simple tones that can be created in CLIP STUDIO PAINT.

Create a [New Raster Layer] from the [Layer] palette and create a layer separate from IC SCREEN Digital.

Use the [Lasso] tool or [Pen] tool to paint the desired shade of gray in the area where you want to apply the tone.

▼ I painted the face, the shadows on the clothes, and the tablet he is holding in his hand grey.

With a layer painted gray selected, you can easily create a tone by selecting [Tone] from the [Layer Property] palette.

Finally, a floral tone (J-475) is placed in the background to complete the manga-style monochrome illustration created using IC SCREEN Digital.

Using IC SCREEN Digital, we were able to create a gorgeous illustration!

Bonus: Useful tips to know

We will introduce some handy techniques for applying tones and managing downloaded tones.

Stock Selection

If you want to use the same selection later or want to fine-tune the selection, save it.

Select the [Selection] menu → [Stock Selection].

The area you created the selection for will turn green, and a new layer called "Selection 1" will be created in the [Layer] palette.

For more information on stock selections, see this article.

Double-click the "Selection 1" layer thumbnail or the green square to recreate the selection.

If you use the [Pen] tool or [Eraser] tool after deselecting the area, you can add or remove from the selection as if you were painting with a brush.

This is recommended when you want to fine-tune the selection area.

Manage downloaded materials with folders

If you download a lot of tones or other materials, it can be difficult to find the tone you want to use.

In such cases, you can manage them in folders.

From the menu at the top left of the [Material] palette, select [Material Folder] → [Create New].

Drag and drop the materials you downloaded from CLIP STUDIO ASSETS into the folder you created.

You can put only the materials you like in a folder and manage them all together, making it easier to find what you want to use.

In addition, for greater ease of use, you can also separate folders in IC SCREEN Digital for effects, backgrounds, gradients, etc.

Finally

More than 400 IC SCREEN Digital assets are available on CLIP STUDIO ASSETS.

Please download them and try using them in your work!

IC Screen

IC Screen is a manga art material in the form of a film sticker with a printed pattern. Approximately 700 types have been manufactured and sold to date, and it has become an indispensable tool in the finishing process of analog manga production. In 2019, we took over the popular art material "J-Tone" (planned and sold by J Co., Ltd.), which was discontinued, and reprinted and released some of the patterns as IC Screen J-TONE.

IC

For 50 years, IC (integrated into G-Too Inc. in 2017) has manufactured and sold IC Screen, primarily as a tool for producing manga manuscripts, designs, and illustrations. In response to long-standing requests from manga artists who have transitioned from analog to digital drawing environments and hobbyists who want to be able to use IC Screen for digital drawing, we have developed IC Screen so that it can be used for digital drawing.
