From Clip Studio Paint Ver. 4.1.0, you can use the 3D head models to draw faces in Simple Mode on tablets and smartphones.

Head models can be viewed from any angle on the canvas, so you can use them to check how a face looks at a certain angle, or to ensure facial symmetry in your drawings. You can also customize the facial features of the models to help when drawing faces outside of your typical range.

The head model comes with eighteen default faces for a range of character styles.

After selecting a model, you can adjust the size and position of features such as the eyes and nose.

This tutorial shows how to use the head model in Simple Mode on a smartphone.

1. Setting up a head model

Placing a head model on the canvas

Tap the Material icon in the upper right corner of the screen to open the Material palette. Next, tap the Head model category and select a model.

Once you tap a head model, it will be placed on the canvas.

Pinch in and out to adjust the size of the head model, and use a two-finger swipe to adjust the position on the canvas.

Adjusting the facial features

In the Object settings tab, tap Adjust features to see individual settings for the eyebrows, eyes, nose, mouth, ears, neck, and angle of the head.

Tap the icons to adjust each feature’s position, size, and angle using the sliders.

Adjust the features based on the kind of character you want to draw.

Some settings, such as the height of the nose, can be hard to see from the front, so you can swipe the head model on the canvas to see it from several angles while adjusting the settings.

Now we’ve finished adjusting the model!

How to switch the current head model to a different one

To reset the selected head model to default or change to a different one, tap Change Head Model from the Object Settings tab to switch the head model to a different preset.

In Studio Mode, you can blend different head models and adjust the facial features more precisely than in Simple Mode. If you want to try the full features of the 3D head model, see the following tutorial.

2. Sketch using the head model

If you have trouble drawing faces in your sketches, try placing a head model to use as a reference. This can help you understand shadow placement as well as the proportions of the face.

Place the head model on the canvas in line with your rough sketch.

Make any necessary changes to the models’ facial features before starting the sketch.

Make sure that the 3D head model layer is beneath the sketch layer so that you can see your lines.

Adjusting the angle and size

Tap Edit 3D layer to edit the head model again.

(1) While the camera is selected, adjust the angle of the head so that it matches with the sketch.

(2) You can adjust the direction of the face from the facial features settings.

Adjusting the perspective and angle

Select the Camera Details tab to adjust the perspective settings and apply a preset angle.

Perspective Slider: This creates a dynamic composition with exaggerated perspective.

Angle preset: You can select from 12 preset angles, such as a front view and overhead view.

Adjusting the lighting

You can adjust the lighting on the 3D model as a reference for shading and painting.

(1) Tap the light source icon and drag on the screen to adjust the angle of the light.

(2) Adjust the strength of the lighting with the bottom slider.

Making the head model fainter

Before sketching, let’s lower the opacity of the head model layer. By making it fainter, you can see your sketch lines more clearly on the canvas.

Creating a line art layer

Tap the [+] symbol to create a new layer above the 3D head model layer. We’ll draw on this layer.

Drawing the face

Use the 3D model as a general guideline for the face structure and facial features. You don’t need to follow the model exactly - you can achieve a good base sketch by following the outline and features such as the ears, nose, and eyes. Try adjusting the line thickness and color according to the highlights and shadows of the face.

The head model doesn’t include parts of the eye like the pupil and iris, so draw these details in while referring to your original rough sketch. For the size of the pupils, you can reference the eyelids of the 3D head model.

Next, you can add the eyelids and eyelashes.

Adding the hair

Draw the hair with some curve at the root to add volume. We’ll focus primarily on the details around the hairline and the top of the head. While drawing the hair, think about the overall flow and the sections of hair for each part of the head, from the bangs to the side and back of the head.

Add any final touches to your sketch while turning the 3D head model layer on and off to check the final appearance. Once you’re satisfied, the sketch is ready.

Downloading head models

As well as the default 3D head models, you can download more head models from Clip Studio Assets.
