MAKING COLLAGES FOR YOUR WEBCOMIC: save time and energy!!
MAKING COLLAGES FOR YOUR WEBTOONS: SAVE TIME AND ENERGY WHILE IMPROVING YOUR STORYTELLING!!!
Hello! In this tutorial, I’ll teach you how to create a digital collage in CLIP STUDIO PAINT, and more importantly, how to use collage techniques in your webtoon to help enhance your storytelling, transitions, and mood and BE MORE TIME EFFICIENT
We’ll be focusing specifically on mixing different media, like 3D models, image materials, and illustrations, to create layered illustrations.
These collages are great for your average panel and scene transitions, dream sequences, symbolic storytelling, etc., and are especially effective in visual scroll webcomics
What is a collage?
So let's start with some basics… a collage is a piece of art made by combining different images, textures, and other visual elements.
—Think of the scrapbook you made in preschool where you glued string, dirt, and one picture on.
These can be minimalistic, chaotic, conceptual, surreal, or narrative-driven, depending on how you want to use them.
Ok… but what does this have to do with my webtoon art?
Most webtoons use a mix of different media to illustrate their panels….
—Your average person doesn't have time to draw the background, characters, sfx, etc., for each and every panel
—… So instead, you use a mix of 3D models, pre-made image materials, brushes, hues, and illustrations… this is a collage
How? You're mixing different mediums, to create one coherent artwork… and you spent 20 minutes doing it (instead of more than 1h yippee)
Collages aren’t just used to make your life easier as an artist, you can use this method to
—Convey mood or emotion
—Represent symbolic ideas or inner thoughts
—Function as a scene transition (e.g, flashbacks, timeskips, etc.)
—Replace exposition-heavy narration with visual metaphors.
HOW TO MAKE A COLLAGE
There is no ‘one way’ to make a collage, that's the great thing about a collage, you can mix and match anything and it’ll be a collage.
When I want to create a collage for my panel, there are some things I take into consideration before creating one
—PURPOSE
—AESTHETIC/STYLE
—SYMBOLS?
PURPOSE: What is the purpose of my collage? Am I just creating a regular panel, or am I trying to convey some deeper idea
—Depending on the purpose of your collage, your approach to creating one might differ
Collage for a regular panel
Let's say I want to create a regular panel of my main character looking back on a battlefield, and on the top of that battlefield field, there's a guy on a horse… and there's a lot of swords and flags and fire and - omg this will take me way too long to draw.
Symbolic panels
These are my fav… because they’re usually even easier to draw AND they are great for capturing the reader's attention and switching things up from your standard panel illustration.
—Symbolic panels tend to look more like a stereotypical collage, and are often used to convey different symbols, moods, themes, etc.
—I use symbolic panels in prologues, storytelling scenes, dream sequences, etc.
For example, in my webtoon, the main character is telling an old legend of how the royal family has been bestowed upon the duty to use their inherited magic to protect the realm, but instead, they abuse it to gain power over the realm.
Now, I can illustrate a panel of the royal family, and another of the magic, and then another of war… or I can make a collage of everything in 10-20 minutes.
HOW? For symbolic panels, the approach slightly differs because first you need to identify the symbols you want to use.
For example, I want to portray royalty, magic, violence, and imperialism…
By making a collage, not only did I convey the main themes that I wanted to in this panel, but it also took me a fraction of the time (10 minutes in comparison to 3-5 hours if I made individual illustrations)
Tools and features you can use to make your collages
Now that you know how to use collages, let’s go over some easy tools you can use to make your collages pop out and mix well together.
Some go-to tools/features that I use are:
Layers
Clipping
Bordereffect
Layers!!!
Layers are probably the most important part of making a collage; you’re mixing all these different mediums, and you need to have the flexibility to move things around.
Try to keep all your objects/illustrations in separate layers. For example, in this panel, character, sword, jewelry, flowers, etc. are all in separate layers
When your layers are separate, you can not only experiment with the placement of your objects, but also use other techniques such as clipping and border effects to enhance your collage
CLIPPING LAYERS
Clipping is a great way to alter your object. A clipping layer is a layer you put on top of your object layer. When you illustrate anything, it clips onto your object layer and does not go on the background or anything outside of the object layer that is below your clipping layer
It is found in the layer section.
\
You can use the clipping layer to add texture, change colors, etc., to your object. In my case I used the clipping layer to change the color of the flowers to better match the hue of the background
Border effect
The border effect tool is great when you want to add some organization or highlight some objects. It is found in the layer property section and basically creates a border around the object in your layer.
\
You can change the color of the border, and the thickness. You can also choose to make a softer border by using the watercolor edge setting.
\
In my example, I felt that sword was getting lost in the background, so I added a white border to make it pop out.
