Hello! In this TIP, I'll show you how to convert a normal scene into a night scene with neon lights and contrast in Clip Studio PAINT. And the best part is that we're going to animate this scene.

If you're new to 2D Animation, this TIP is perfect for you; it will be very easy to follow and apply all the steps!

Don't just stop at a night illustration; I invite you to create a night animation!

Whether you're a Clip Studio PAINT PRO or EX user, this TIP is for you, as we'll only be animating 24 frames :)

What we're going to do:

We'll start with this scene:

To finish with our night scene :)

I invite you to watch the video where I show you how to do it!

Believe me, it's easier than it looks ;)

TUTORIAL: Animate a Night Scene in Clip Studio PAINT

You can watch the video in English and Spanish!

Plus, subtitles will always be available in your language!

TIP Review:

Now let's go over the most important points.

Original Scene

Lights

We'll start with this animation scene, and to add the animated lights, we'll go to the timeline to create a new animation folder.

Then, in the Layers panel, inside this animation folder, we will create a new layer folder.

In both folders (the animation folder and the layer folder), we change the blending modes from Normal to Through.

Then, inside the layer folder, we create a new raster layer.

And for this new layer, we change its blending mode to: Add (Glow)

And with the airbrush tool, we choose a color from the scene (we can start with the purple of the sign) and begin to create the lights of the scene, painting over the areas we want to illuminate.

Achieving the following result.

Then we add another raster layer and change the blending mode to Add (Glow) and paint the light areas again, such as the sign and light boxes.

Now we create a new raster layer and change the blending mode to Overlay. With the same airbrush tool, we make its brush larger, choose purple and yellow colors to paint the general light of the scene more broadly.

Can you see the change from how we started to how it looks now? The change is truly incredible! :)

Light Animation

Now we simply duplicate the layer folder containing all these lights, and since it's an animation, when duplicated, we can place this new folder (which is a frame) on frame 3, and we can vary the opacity in both frames to create a simple light animation in our scene.

Also, don't forget to shorten the animation duration to 4 frames, and then we can duplicate the animation until it completes the duration up to frame 24.

Shadows and Contrast

Finally, we add a new layer folder called Shadows. Inside it, we add more raster layers with the Overlay blending mode.

And we add an extra layer called Neon, with the Add (Glow) blending mode. And with the airbrush tool, using a very large brush, we choose the color purple and start painting the areas we want to highlight, generating greater contrast and making our scene look great.

Export Animation

Go to File - Export animation - Movie

We give a name to our new video file.

And export

Waiting for our new animation to be created as a video.

Final Animation

This is the animation we were able to achieve! I really love it! With the new colors, it looks beautiful!

As you could see, it was very simple to do! I encourage you to do it too!

See you in the next TIP!
