Observing values and applying them

So u can't render some eyes? ꉂ (´∀`)ʱªʱªʱ

Well, to render is to get value pattern right, yes even with eyes. Cus it's illustration time🗿 not to worry it's not that complicated with eyes, really. Can vary depending on style what u r going to copy/inspired from so, start with small steps and a dam refrence.

A. Let's observe few things first-

When compared with more stylized look in values we will see similar results-

Blue and red one follow similar look from dark to lighter shade on downside where light usually reflects on. That green eye is bit more tweaked still, it follows same general values with colors in more “greyish” side always blends really well with their surroundings this can be tweaked around lot too.

Why this works? Every stylized version is exaggerated or a break down of a realistic subject, yes every. Observing these sketches (dark- light- mid) tones divided in parts because not every color in grayscale needs to be applied.

Reduce it within different parts just keep the scale balanced with (lights n darks) so the focul point is clear and that it's not blending everywhere not forgetting the saturation cus high saturation directs eyes attention first we will see more within process.

This reduction of tones can be done in general paintings aswell but we on eyes so-

1. Start simple

1. Eye sketch, start with basic shape then carve the eye from it by sticking the lashes, ball and going in depth for eye anatomy well, it's rendering tutorial if it wasn't clear at first-

2. Flat colors

2. flats-

Any regular round brush with low opacity can be used here i did change sharpness later.

So, take hue (color) with low saturation (bit faded side but lighter value) so it'll mix well with other tones & won't stand out much, low saturation stays lowkey. Lowkey things works highkey well.

•Higher value= lighter tone, Lower value=darker, High saturation= intensity of color “more colored” color, it grabs attention faster. That’s why we keep sclera (the white part) greyish or low saturated not fully white.

Higher saturation than the flat one ^ plus don't stay on same color i moved the scale above for more variations

Add darker value compared to what initial ones are, we need to make it clear where the “dark” “light” falls so we don't confuse stuff later yeh? big shapes for clear image where hard lines and more softer side of paint will be.

2.a. Color choices

These colors somewuat follows analogue’s way but the lower part of iris is complementary, (i did study of this refrence so chose colors according to it) if chosen lighter shade of blue would be same in high value but going with more redish hue later, it has more contrast in a sense different side of tones gives good contrast like those -white dots outlined with darker color.

Color choosing can be discourteous. If go by color theory it has complementary (that r opposite in color wheel), analogues (next to each) to triads colors (color match in triangular form) +warm n cool tones. Start small but don't fully stick with color theory THAT much u could mix things around like in this, Use theory as start later mix things around think of it as whole not a strict diet.

3. Add depth with value+ saturation control = value pattern

See now more saturated colored dots and lines makes overall paint pop?

Also, add another layer of that dot patterns and copy it (+layer) above. Turn opacity to full & lower brush size for sharper edges for those “sparkle” patterns on lashes (can use lasso tool for faster and sharper patterns) give depth with hard lines above the painted ones. Like i said, with opposite hue it pops out way more. just keep the general look in mind of where dark/lights can go-

Then take more saturated side from here there that compliments well, the (+layer) I mentioned to copy (+layer) set it on *overlay* if u want to give it more contrast or “shine” later (12 is without overlay, 13 is with it). Tho don't alwaaaays rely fully on these but it's still very helpful so use it when ya can, things can be experimented.

I don’t really color pick because i like making my life tuff but that's how u learn n get artist quality development, see where saturation is high/low then the scale of value u will get it after few errors trust unlike that vids color quality having tuffer life 😔

The middle part has green on more greyish side, it blends well with others

More stylized look with limited value tones^

•To turn ur colors into greyscale, set a layer above ur color layer/s then bucket whole canvas with black then set layer mode to color. Set it above n check ur work in between and after it’s done.

See the dark value behind the grey mixed color/s like i said before it blends well with others which creates good contrast and intersting style.

Sooooo that's y i said value understaing is necessary even if it is to make simple iris. U can play around after practicing these for different styles and then create ur own if u want.

Studying others is the key process, Understand the rules to break them, otherwise u won't get rich and flex big moni skills on the pauper quality artists fr so u need to understand the politics of art, not the art of politics. That can be done later sometime byeeeooo for now (^∇^)ノ♪
