ClipStudioOfficial

You can now paint on 3D object materials and custom models in Studio Mode just like 3D drawing figures and primitives from Ver. 5.0.

You can export what you painted on your own 3D model as a texture image (EX version only).

Note that you can only paint on 3D models that have been UV unwrapped and have texture images applied to them.

You can draw patterns while rotating the 3D model, making it easier to paint complex shapes, designs, and custom model textures.

3D materials and files you can paint on

You can use paint directly on the following types of 3D models.

・ Assets materials (Must be UV unwrapped and have texture images)

・ 3D drawing figures (excluding Ver.1 figures)

・ 3D primitives

・ 3D object materials

・ 3D models imported to Clip Studio Paint (FBX, OBJ, etc.)

Note that you can only paint on 3D models that have been UV unwrapped and have texture images applied to them.

You cannot draw on 3D head models, 3D character materials, 3D background materials, panorama materials, or 3D hand models.

Importing a 3D object to the canvas

Drag and drop the 3D object material from the Material palette onto the canvas to add it.

You can import your own 3D models or external 3D files from the File menu > Import > 3D Data, or by directly dragging and dropping the file onto the canvas.

Drawing on a 3D object material

While selecting a 3D object material, you can freely draw on it using brush and pen tools.

Tools you can use to paint on 3D models

You can use tools in the following tool groups: Pen, Sketch, Brush, Eraser, Airbrush, and Decoration.

You cannot use the Dot pen brush in the Pen tool group.

Color Jitter or Color mixing settings cannot be used when painting on a 3D model, like the Pointillism brush in the Brush tool or the Glitter brush in the Decoration tool.

You can draw on the parts that are currently visible on the screen.

To paint the sides or back of an object, switch to the Object tool, and rotate the 3D object material to paint it from a different angle.

If paint appears in multiple areas

If a material shares the same texture across multiple parts, the paint will be applied to each place that the texture is used.

If the same texture is used in reverse on each side of an object, the pattern you draw on the left side will also be flipped and drawn on the right side.

Depending on the position of the textures, you might get unintended results.

Check how the paint is applied to the textures of the material as you work.

If a “forbidden” symbol appears when painting

You can't paint on 3D object materials that don’t have a vertex UV or texture. If you try to paint on a 3D object that isn't supported, a “forbidden” symbol will appear.

Exporting the painted texture (EX)

You can export the textures you painted as an image if painting on your own 3D models or external 3D files. The exported image can be used as a texture for 3D models in other 3D software.

Select a 3D model, then go to Advanced Tool Settings > Object > Batch export textures to export the texture images in PNG format to any location you want.

If you’re exporting a texture image made up of multiple parts, it will be exported as a single image file.

Only the base colors drawn with the brush tools will be outputted.

Other material settings like bumps (normal map), gloss, and texture won't be exported.

Note: You can't use the Batch export textures button for default materials or 3D object materials downloaded from ASSETS.

Techniques for painting on 3D

Turn the light source off while painting

If the part you're rendering looks dark and hard to see because of shadows on the model, you can turn off Apply light source in the Object tool's Advanced Tool Settings palette. The shadows won’t appear this way, making it easier to see.

Draw symmetrical patterns

To draw a pattern that's perfectly symmetrical, use the Ruler tool > Symmetrical ruler.

Select the layer of the 3D object material and drag the symmetrical ruler to the center of the part you want to draw symmetrically, and then draw your pattern.

To create a vertical symmetrical ruler, drag while holding the Shift key.

Note: Deleting the perspective ruler.

When you create a symmetrical ruler, the perspective ruler connected to the 3D layer may appear, making it hard to see the screen. If you don't need the perspective ruler, you can delete it before making the symmetrical ruler.

Delete the perspective ruler by selecting the ruler icon on the 3D layer in the Layer palette, then going to the Layer menu > Ruler/Frame > Delete Ruler.

For details on editing a Symmetrical ruler, please refer to the user guide.

Registering as a material

You can register 3D object materials and 3D models that you've painted to the Material palette.

This is handy for objects and designs that you plan to use frequently.

Select Register 3D Object to Material Palette from the Object Launcher, choose the material name and save destination, then push OK.

Editing a registered material

When editing the registered material, the conditions for painting are different compared to before you registered the material.

Make sure to save any materials that might need adjustments as Clip files.

You can paint over registered material on the canvas, but you can't erase the registered paint with an eraser or transparent color.

  • When painting on top of registered paint, the brush's blending mode (such as Multiply) won't be applied. Paint will be applied in Normal blending mode.

Rules for publishing on ASSETS

You can't publish any materials that you’ve made by painting on other people’s materials from ASSETS or by painting on the default materials. You can only share models that you’ve created yourself and hold the rights to.
