How to Create a Simple Background in Clip Studio Paint!
Drawing backgrounds can feel complicated and time consuming. Many artists either over-detail everything or avoid backgrounds completely. In this guide, I’ll explain how I create a simplified but pretty background in Clip Studio Paint using a clear, step-by-step process.
My process is simple:
1. Sketch.
2.Block colors and objects.
3. Add details.
4. Lighting.
Step 1: Sketch
First, create a rough sketch of the background. Don’t focus on tiny details, Only draw the main shapes and placement of objects (like buildings, trees, or clouds).
Step 2: Block in Colors and Objects
Next, create new layers over the sketch and start filling in flat colors.
Using tools like:
LassoFillTool
PenTool
FillTool
Block in the main objects as solid shapes. This makes the background clean and easy to detail in the next stage.
At this stage, it might look simple or even flat and that’s okay!
Step 3: Add Details
After the base colors are finished, add small but important details. Don’t draw everything, only add enough detail to make the scene believable.
For example: texture hints, light patterns, flowers, etc.
Step 4: Lighting
Finally, create a new layer set to Add, Overlay or Soft light and gently add light and shadows.
This is what makes the background look pretty without needing extreme detail. Lighting can make even simple shapes feel magical!
After adjusting opacity if needed, the background is complete!
