When I create illustrations by request, I often have the opportunity to draw characters with lots of decorations.

 

However, if you draw accessories from scratch, you won't make it in time for the deadline.

 

So! This time, I'd like to introduce techniques for drawing while saving time by using materials and ribbon brushes!

1 Determine the Direction with a Rough Sketch

This time, I will introduce techniques using an illustration I drew by request.

 

To draw accessories and small items that match the character, it's important to refine them from the rough sketch stage.

 

Adding them later can be fun, but if you don't decide on the direction from the beginning, it might end up looking disjointed.

2 Save Time on Frills and Lace with Ribbon Brushes

Save time on frills and lace by using materials and ribbon brushes.

 

I think intricate decorations turn out cleaner if you intentionally don't draw them by hand.

3 How to Draw Enamel Shoes and Stylish Hats!

Since the character is wearing a dress that gives off a young lady vibe, I will finish the shoes and hat as luxurious enamel shoes.

 

I will express the texture by referring to references and other artists' making-of videos.

Roughly apply colors with a Real G-pen with reduced opacity → mix colors using the 'Blend while retaining texture' tool → repeatedly add roughness with the pencil tool.

Apply red and blue softly with an airbrush on an overlay layer, then reduce the opacity, and it's complete!

4 Make Plush Toys Cute with Watercolor and Gradient Maps!

I will explain how to paint cute plush toys!

First, use watercolor to paint shadows in gray.

The trick is to layer darker colors little by little and blend them with the same brush.

After applying pure white from the light source with an airbrush on a Dodge (Glow) layer, place blue and red colors in various spots on an Overlay layer.

 

Then, applying a texture over it instantly creates the plush toy's texture.

Finally, duplicate all the layers where you painted the plush toy + combine the duplicated layers, then use a gradient map to increase the color variations, and it's complete!!
