Hi, I'm Yoani, and I'm going to explain how to easily paint textures in Clip Studio.

Canvas

To start, use your preferred canvas size. I use 1080 x 1350 at 72dpi, which is for social media.

The first thing I do is choose a texture for the illustration. You can find them on the right side or in the tabs at the top: Window, Material [Monochromatic pattern]. You just need to drag the texture you want, and it will appear as a new layer. I recommend locking it so you don't paint over it.

Create a new layer and add a light coat of paint with your preferred brush. I recommend a brush size larger than 60 so that paint patches are not visible (the size also depends on each brush).

Brushes and textures

You can also download and modify brushes from Clip Studio's material library.

First, select the brush, and in the settings, you'll find a tool icon. Select it, and it will take you directly to the brush's advanced settings. Then you need to go to [Texture] and Paper texture [None], and another window will open where you can choose your preferred material. Finally, you just need to click [OK], and you're done.

Option 1. Brush texture.

Option 2. Brush tip.

Another way to add texture is also in the advanced settings, but this time you select Brush tip, then Material, and select the leaf icon with a plus symbol. A new window will open where you can choose the texture.

Sketch

You can start painting on as many layers as you want. Remember to create the sketch on a single layer and lock it so you don't paint over it; you can activate and deactivate it whenever you want.

On the layers where you add color, you can start painting with any brushes you like. I recommend painting without considering color blending, but do consider the order of the layers.

How to blend paint

Once it's ready, you can use the Paint Mixer as it blends colors best without losing highlights and shadows.

You can also use Blur if you don't want the colors to combine. Sometimes I use the paint mixer first and then blur, and then I go over it again with the brush, which gives a very nice effect to the illustrations.

If you think your illustration is missing something, I recommend using brushes with a lot of texture or shapes. Don't forget to create layers for the different textures you add.

And that's it! You just need to follow this small order to create a beautiful illustration.
