Make Your Digital Art Feel Traditional Using Paper Texture
Introduction
Digital art can sometimes feel too clean or flat. One simple way to make your artwork feel more natural is by adding a paper texture. In this tutorial, I’ll show you an easy method using Soft Light or Overlay blending modes in Clip Studio Paint. This method is beginner-friendly and works with any illustration.
This is how the illustration looks after applying a paper texture. It adds a subtle grain and makes the artwork feel more traditional.
What you'll need
1. Finished or semi Finished artwork.
2. A paper texture image (you can download one or use CSP assets).
3. Textured brushes.
Add Paper Texture
Create a folder and set its blending mode to Soft Light or Overlay. Then, drag and drop your paper texture onto the canvas, and make sure the texture layer is inside the folder.
You can also add more than one paper texture and layer them to create a richer texture effect
Set the color of the paper
Use a slightly warm gray or off-white background to help the paper texture become more visible, especially when using subtle blending modes like Soft Light.
Adjust opacity of the textures
Lower the opacity of the texture layer to around 20%–50% depending on your preference. Adjust it until the texture looks natural and not too strong.
Soft light vs Overlay
1. Soft Light: softer and more natural look.
2. Overlay: stronger contrast and more visible texture.
If your artwork already has strong colors, Soft light usually works better.
Applying in Artwork
In this example, I used a paper texture with Soft Light to create a soft and slightly grainy look And Mechanical pencil brush and default Texture brushes like charcoal and pastel. It helps the illustration feel more atmospheric and less digital, especially for calm or nostalgic scenes.
Tips for better results
1. Use High-resolution textures for better quality.
2. Lower the opacity if the texture looks too harsh.
3. Try different textures (rough paper, water color paper, etc.)
4. You can duplicate the texture layer for a stronger effect, then lower the opacity
Conclusion
Adding paper texture is a simple way to improve your digital art and give it a more traditional feel. Try experimenting with different textures and blending modes to find what fits your style best.
