[1] Representing depth with gradient

Since I want to create depth on the ground, I will use gradient.

I use the [Auto select] tool to select the ground color on the “colors” layer.

Then, I create a new layer above the “colors” layer, and set the blending mode to [Multiply]. I use the [Gradient] > [Foreground to transparent] tool to apply a blue to transparent gradient.

[2] Using a paper texture for finishing

Lastly, in order to reproduce the roughness of the paper and a slightly faded texture, I add a paper texture layer.

(1) I import a scan of gray cardboard (from my usual sketchbook) on a different canvas.

Note: When you drag and drop an image onto CLIP STUDIO PAINT’s canvas, it will load on a new canvas.

(2) As I want to remove the edges, I select the overall shape using the [Selection area] > [Rectangle] tool and trim the section.

(3) On the [Layer property] palette, I change the [Expression color] to gray.

(4) I add variety with [Edit] > [Tonal Correction] > [Level Correction].

(5) I select the [Selection area] menu > [Select Color Gamut].

A dialog box will open. When I move the cursor over the canvas, the cursor turns into an [Eyedropper], and I use that tool to click the white part.

Note: On the [Select Color Gamut] dialog box, when you set the [Selection type] to [Select additionally], you can select multiple color gamuts with the [Eyedropper].

When I click OK, the selected area turns into a selection area.

(6) I press the [Delete] key to delete the contents of the selection area.

(7) Then, I select the [Selection area] menu > [Invert selected area], and fill the leftover white parts with the [Edit] menu > [Fill].

Note:

You can also adjust the texture image in the same way using the [Layer Property] palette.

① Change the expression color to [Monochrome], adjust the [Color threshold], and only display black.

② Set the layer color to white.

③ Uncheck the [Reflect layer opacity] option.

In addition, if you convert the texture image to a [Image material] layer, you will be able to use the [Texture combine] effect within the [Layer property] palette.

■ How to convert an image to a [Image material] layer.

Right click the layer, select [Convert Layer], and then select [Image material layer] on the displayed dialog box.

If you drag and drop the converted layer onto the [Material] palette, you can register the material and use it for other works too.

(8) I go to the [Selection area] menu > [Select All] and copy the entire texture from the [Edit] menu > [Copy]. Then, I go back to my canvas and paste the texture from the [Edit] menu > [Paste].

(9) I place the layer with the texture on top of the layer palette, and adjust the color balance. I also set the opacity to 8%.

Note: If the texture effect is too strong, the originally placed color will be weaker. Therefore, I made the texture effect fainter.

Finally, I edit the texture position with [Edit] > [Transform] > [Scale up/Scale down/Rotate] and the illustration is complete!
