I usually draw illustrations for social games, etc.

Sketch

I wanted to show how to make traditional Japanese patterns in this lecture, so I decided to add a girl to make it easier to add flair, and settled on a male/female composition (instead of just a male as planned).

The concept is “shrine maiden child and pushover tengu”.

First, select the [File] menu > [New] > [Use of work] and select [Comic]. From [Preset], select [A4 color (350 dpi)] and create a canvas.

I used the [Pencil] tool > [Darker pencil] sub tool for the rough sketch.

Laying down a base sketch for the character bodies will help solidify the drawing later on. Clothes, etc. are detailed just enough to understand the design and flow.

The girl’s shoulder width is slightly larger than the head and round. Being a child and with the kimono hiding her form, her torso shape doesn’t curve.

The male character is difficult to understand because he is facing sideways, but using his head to shoulder 1:1 width ratio as a guide, I differentiated him from the girl using his arm and chest muscles.

In both cases, I cheat the parts that will be hidden.

From the navigator palette, I click [Flip Horizontally] to draw faces while looking at the balance of the visage.

Note: Click [Flip Horizontal] again to revert to the original view

Before finishing, I flip the canvas to check the entire image. Flipping the image makes it easier to see the mistakes.

Decorations such as flowers are added to the foreground to populate the screen, and the sketch is done.

In particular, I don’t have a set visual in mind when drawing an “original illustration” and go with the flow, so the sketch may change.
