A sunny flower garden feels warm and hopeful, while a dim and dark scene can instantly create tension.
With Clip Studio Paint’s Background Materials, 3D Assets, filters, and lighting, it’s easy to set the mood of your panels without drawing every detail from scratch. ( •̀ ω •́ )✧
↬ Find Background Materials
Go to Window → Material → Background
Browse categories like Nature, Architecture, Interiors, Fantasy, Cityscapes, School, and Castles.
Simply drag a material onto your canvas to begin.

Now let’s dive into creating a mysterious and magical background using a 3D object! (❁´◡`❁)
Import a 3D Background
Step 1) Import a 3D Palace Background
Open the Material palette and drag a 3D object onto your canvas.
Use the Object Tool to adjust the camera angle and perspective.
💡 Tip: A wide shot on a longer panel gives you more space for the sky and a smoother transition to the next panel.
Convert to Lines and Tones
Step 2) Simplify the 3D Model with "Convert to Lines and Tones"
With the 3D layer selected, go to Layer → Convert to Lines and Tones.
I choose Vector layer as the layer type.
Adjust the different settings to match your style: set Line Width to Low, and Tone Density to Low or Off for a cleaner webtoon look.
Enable Extract Texture Lines if you want more details.
This will create editable line art and tones from your 3D model while preserving the original perspective.
💡 Tip: First, duplicate the original 3D layer so you can easily go back and tweak the camera whenever needed.
Using the Object tool, you can edit the extracted lineart by adjusting the line width (Brush Size) and changing the brush shape to ensure the background lineart matches the rest of your Webtoon!
Step 4) Select the layer with the darkest tone, then under “Selection from Layer”,
click “Create Selection.”
On a new layer, add a base color, then change the blending mode, I choose “Overlay”.
It’s not a huge difference in this example, but it can be really useful if you want to add line art, shadows, or recolor the 3D object yourself.

Add a Background Material
Step 5) I added a beautiful sky material that’s perfect for webtoons!
To match the dark blue-green vibe I wanted, I changed the whole layer color of the sky material.
Then went back and changed the color of the layer I created from the earlier selection, and adjusted the blending mode again.
Create Soft Lighting
Step 6) Create a new layer above the entire group, and add a gradient, set the blending mode to “Add (Glow)”, and then adjust the opacity.
Using a large, soft airbrush, add light along the edges to blend seamlessly with the background. Finally, merge and duplicate all the background layers.
Soften the Background
Step 7) Soften the Background
Filter → Quick Effects → Lens Blur
On the duplicated layer, apply the lens blur effect to the top layer.
Erase areas until the effect is subtle, creating soft depth and preventing detailed backgrounds from appearing too out of focus.
Then on the lower duplicated layer, use a blur pen to gently soften the sharp edges.
Unify the Mood with Color Adjustments
Step 8) Unify the Mood with Color Adjustments
Filter → Quick Filters → Cool
For a mysterious palace, use a cool blue to create a consistent atmosphere throughout the scene, then just adjust the color a bit more for your panel.
Add Atmospheric Details
Step 9) Add new layers for flower details and a vignette to darken the edges/ panel outlines, drawing attention to the center.
Finish the panel with a few subtle adjustments by optionally adding a paper texture.
On a separate layer, set to “Add (Glow),” add light sparkles for a gentle shimmer.
🌟 Final Result
With these different Clip Studio Paint features, you can turn a simple 3D background model into a dramatic webtoon scene, without drawing every detail from scratch.
For example: dark blue can feel cold and mysterious, warm red gives a romantic vibe, warm orange feels cheerful and welcoming, while sepia or green-brown tones evoke nostalgia, like an aged photograph.

😒Creating Fun "Meme" Panels
Add a Background Material
Step 1) Start with Your Character
Start with your character illustration. For reaction panels, keep the pose and shading minimal, letting the background convey the emotion.
Step 2) Add a Background Material
Instead of creating a background from scratch, utilize a ready-made material from the Clip Studio Asset Library.
Pick a design that reflects the mood: wavy lines for an uneasy/ thoughtful vibe, dark gradients for tension and drag it on the canvas.
Step 3) Separate the Character with a Border Effect
Select the character folder and enable:
Layer Property → Border Effect
Adjust the border thickness and choose an edge color. This will create a clean, sticker-like outline that separates the character from the background.
💡 Perfect for reaction panels to give a comedic-style vibe.
Step 4) Paint Soft Light
Add a new layer above the background, then use a Soft Airbrush to gently paint around the character, to make it stand out.
Add more Effects
Step 5) Add a Gradient
Use the Gradient Tool with a dark-to-light transition, and set the layer blending mode to “Overlay”. To unify the scene without overpowering the illustration.
Step 6) Add Sound Effects
Reaction panels become much more expressive with typography.
Use the Text Tool, sound effect materials from the Asset Library, or hand-letter your own sound effects to match your artstyle.
You can also add small symbols like zigzags, scribbles, or sparkles to help reinforce the emotions.
Step 7) Add Paper Textures or Line Effects (Optional)
I like adding a paper texture over the panel, then adjust the opacity and set it to “Color Burn.”
Adding vertical line textures works well for emphasizing awkward or dramatic pauses.
Side-note: The Assets I didn’t include are not available anymore.
🌟 Final Result
By only adjusting the Background Image Material, gradient, and effects, you can easily create a variety of reusable reaction panels to save time.
💡For example, use blue for uneasy moments, red for angry moments, yellow for comedic moments, and pink for embarrassed scenes.
