I will introduce how to create ribbon brushes and some tips for doing so.

<How to Create>

 

01 Create a canvas.

 

File → New

Width: 16.00cm

Height: 16.00cm

Resolution: 600

Basic expression color: Color

02 Prepare the image

 

Here, for clarity, I will use modified versions of the numbers 1 and 2.

03 Cut

 

Enclose the right part of the image with the [Rectangle] selection tool.

Go to Edit → Cut to cut it.

Restore the cut image using Edit → Paste, and change it to blue by changing the Layer Color.

While holding [Shift], move it horizontally to the left and place it on the left side of the original image.

Change the layer color back to black, select both the original image layer and the cut image layer, and go to Layer → Merge selected layers to combine them into one layer.

Right-click on that layer → Select Convert Layer.

Change the expression color to "Monochrome."

(You must do this to be able to change colors later.)

Enclose the area with a rectangle selection larger than the image, then go to Selection → Stock Selection to create a green stock selection.

(Always create image materials by enclosing them with a rectangle selection.)

Cut the stock selection using a rectangle selection to create the selection area for creating the image material.

First, cut the top and bottom of the stock selection with a rectangle selection to match the image.

Next, cut the left and right of the stock selection to fit the image perfectly.

This is the key point.

 

 

First, the right side.

Roughly enclose the part of the green stock to be cut with a rectangle selection.

After enclosing it, zoom in until you can see the individual pixels.

(In this case, zoomed in 1600 times.)

 

 

Slowly move the selection area toward the right edge of the image.

It will snap perfectly to the edge of the image, so stop there.

Delete the enclosed area with [Ctrl] + [X].

Do the same for the left side as you did for the right side: zoom in significantly → snap it → delete the unnecessary parts.

 

 

(Point)

 

Please note that the selection won't snap unless you zoom in.

If you snap it before cutting, the left and right sides will connect seamlessly when used as a ribbon.

After cutting the top, bottom, left, and right of the stock, the stock for image material registration is complete.

Rename the stock layer to the image name.

Register the image material.

 

(Precautions before registration)

Before registering, check if the layer expression color is set to Monochrome using "Convert Layer."

When creating with only black, go to Edit → Convert brightness to opacity, delete the white parts, and make it a black-only image.

Selection → Selection from Stock

Edit → Register Material → Image → Open Material Property

Check "Tiling" under "Paste operation" and check if the image connects properly. (Uncheck "Tiling" once confirmed.)

Input your handle name, etc., in search tags

Configure Ribbon Brush settings

 

・Brush size

・Blending mode: Normal

・Direction: 90.0

・Stroke: Check "Ribbon"

 

 

・Brush tip 1 → Material → Select "Brush tip shape" → Search for and select the material you registered earlier.

For the brush settings, just configuring the following parts is fine.

For this brush, ignore other sections.

Test.

Also, check if you can change the colors.

Icon creation 100 x 100 px

Rectangle selection → Check "Specify ratio/size," and enclose the image drawn with the brush in a square.

Make the background transparent.

File → Flatten and Export, choose png, and save at 100 x 100 px.

*Creating an icon allows you to identify it at a glance when added to Quick Access.

Select brush → Tool settings → User settings → Select icon image.

Check "Background color of icon" and choose your preferred color.

It is now complete.

Application A: Black and White Ribbon Brush

 

By combining main and sub colors, you can draw with any two colors you like.

Application B: Color Brush

 

*When converting layers, register as "Color" instead of "Monochrome."

*Colors cannot be changed.

Application C: Pentagonal Black and White Brush

Creating custom materials is all about creating the selection range when registering image materials.

 

Zoom in big, approach slowly, and snap it perfectly.

 

If you master this trick, you can create beautifully connected ribbon brushes even with complex images.
