Punk-style black makeup, cool and glamorous purplish-red, Ice Queen light blue, Japanese-style cute light pink...\n\nWhen drawing characters, observing real-life makeup and analyzing the relationship between eyeshadow, blush, lip color, and light/shadow allows you to translate these elements into illustrative designs.\n\n(Since CLIP STUDIO TIPS prohibits the use of unauthorized photos as references, I used my own photos as a reference and analyzed my own makeup into tips that can also be used for 2D characters.)

1. Blush

The placement of blush changes the impression a character gives.\nFor example:\n+ Under-eye blush: Increases cuteness and girlishness 💗\n+ Center of the cheeks: Increases a healthy look 🧡\n+ Outer cheeks: Increases maturity and a fashionable feel 💜

2. Lip Color

The color and shine of the lips can enhance a character's temperament.\nFor example:\n+ Translucent lip color → Fresh and natural\n+ High saturation colors → Gorgeous and confident\n+ Dark lip color → Mature and mysterious

Step 2: Creating Makeup Layers

In CLIP STUDIO PAINT, I usually use different layer modes to paint makeup.\nCompared to coloring directly on a Normal layer, layer modes allow the makeup colors to blend with the character's original skin tone, avoiding the feeling that the 'color is just pasted onto the face.'

Step 3: Using 'Multiply' to Create Shadows

Step 4: Using 'Overlay / Soft Light' to Add Translucency

Layer Modes:\n+ Overlay\n+ Soft Light\nThese modes are suitable for:\n+ Blush\n+ Eyeshadow blending\n+ Highlights\n+ Makeup translucency\nI usually lower the layer opacity to let the color blend naturally with the skin.

The same makeup techniques can also be applied to characters with different skin tones.\nThe key is not to use fixed colors but to adjust:\n+ Color Value (Brightness)\n+ Saturation\n+ Layer Opacity\nFor example:\nDarker skin tones:\\nYou can increase the saturation of the makeup colors to make them stand out more.\nLighter skin tones:\\nYou can use softer colors to increase translucency.
