How to make collage-like scenery

Deciding on scenery

Look through your downloaded assets, find something that sparks interest.

 

 

I’m doing a beach with mountains in the back.

Adding a background

I’m choosing a sky for my background, but if your scene is in the woods you might want a bunch of trees instead.

Resize it to your liking.

Add your ground

Now go back to the assets, I’m going to find some nice beige pattern for the sand.

I added the parchment texture, I think it looks a lot like sand.

Adding the main focus

For the main focus it should be a third layer. Either some bushes, or some water, or maybe even some extra grass. Whatever fits in your scene!

 

Note:

Do not add any people or objects yet.

I chose a cloudy sky for my water to make it look dreary out.

People and objects!

Now the fun part! for this you can either add a person or an object.

People

Think about what you want your characters to be doing in this scene.

 

I want my characters to be playing at the top of the sand dune.

You can either make your own character or use a pre-existing 3d pose.

I’ll be making my own.

Now that I have my characters I can add an object.

Objects

You can add a shovel, a table, anything.

 

I’ll be adding a close up bucket and shovel.

All you need to do is draw it, unless you need a reference from assets.

So, a bit of lighting talk.

You can skip this if you want, but it shouldn’t be hard.

First, find the airbrush tool

Then add a new layer.

Next, go to where your object(s) is/are.

use your airbrush and use your eyedropper to get the color, then make it lighter with yellow in the color mixer (or white).

Now use the airbrush with that color for the lightest parts on the object.

then blend it out going slowly back to the original color.

Repeat this step on your other objects and/or characters.

Mood

The mood of a scene is what you want your audience to feel when they see your scene. If you can already see this in your collage parts you can skip this.

I’m going for a sad/memory look. I want to show this by making it grey and vivid.

To do this I’ll be making a new layer (make sure it’s a raster layer.)

I will then use the airbrush and put a grayish-yellow over everything.

Then change your opacity to your liking.

Then you add different colors in places you think that fit.

I added golden haze to the parts I wanted to highlight.

Text

Write a caption in big letters in a color that stands out somewhere on the page.

Then add a border.

 

Layer properties> Border Effect> Thickness of edge> 72.22 or until your letters touch.

You can make it off-white if you’d like.

To add texture (optional) you can select lock transparent pixels.

Then you can choose either a pattern brush from assets or a paintbrush. (For patterns make opacity pretty light.)

Then paint over your letters to make texture.

I used the chain brush.

And you’re done!
