Hello, welcome to this new guide on how to draw feet with shoes. I'm going to try to use the method I always use when drawing, which is to simplify everything as much as possible into simple shapes. This helps us structure the different objects we draw, in this case, the feet and footwear. I hope my guide is useful to you.

The foot and its function

First, let's understand what the foot is like and what its function is. This is important because it allows us to create simple shapes for the foot when drawing it later. The main function of the foot is to provide stability to the body.

Let's look at the structure of the foot:

1.- The sole of the foot (the bottom part) is more padded and soft: it has a layer of fat and muscles that act as a natural cushion.

2.- In contrast, the top part is harder and the bones are more prominent, especially the instep and the ankles.

 

 

The shape

In the foot, we will have the following shape: it will be wider in the toe area and narrow progressively toward the heel. For this reason, we will use an elongated trapezoid to represent it, as seen in the image. This simple geometric shape serves as a base structure to contain the silhouette of the foot and the sole of the shoe.

 

 

The curves of the foot

The foot also has a curved structure. It is important to take these curves into account when structuring its form; when making gesture drawings of the foot, these curves will be useful for representing its movement.

An important point is that shoes follow the shape of the foot.

To draw footwear, I usually use the following steps; I hope they help you.

 

 

1.- First, I make a gestural sketch of the foot, always starting from the ankle because, as I mentioned, the structure starts there.

2.- Then, we structure that gestural sketch into more solid forms, giving shape to the foot without focusing on details, but rather on a more general figure of the foot.

3.- And finally, what I do is draw the design of the shoe over this shape; in the same way, when drawing the shoe, let's focus on its general shape first, then we will add the different details.

Here is another example of the shape of the shoe over the shape of the foot, where we must take into account the different volumes that the footwear has. That's why we should always have a reference to draw everything correctly.

 

This way, the shoe adapts naturally to the foot.

 

 

And well, finally I want to mention that drawing footwear has its own process. You can research more in books, both about the structure of the foot and that of the shoe. Footwear has many details and very varied designs, so practice from the simplest to the most complex.
