Finally Overcame the Difficulty of Drawing Hands! ...Only to Find Feet Even Harder!

Hello everyone, I'm Jjiao. It's surprising how many materials are available for reference now! However, this time I'd like to try sharing my experience when drawing sandals.

For this demonstration, I used a 3D model as a base. My goal is to draw a girl in a cute swimsuit paired with sandals.

First, Simplify Complex Steps as Much as Possible!

While there are many methods online to help you draw feet more three-dimensionally, when drawing shoes, I recommend temporarily ignoring the idea of over-dimensionalizing the soles of the feet. Since the shoe will wrap around the foot, it might actually create obstacles to a certain extent.

First, imagine the shape of socks and divide the sole into three parts! As for what type of sandals to draw, I've decided to draw a slightly more complex style that can be matched with the outfit.

Start from the Sole—Just Like Building a House~

First, decide on the height and style of the heel. This is very important. By first establishing the height and how thick you want the heel to be, you can find real-life photos that are similar for reference. I roughly sketched out the desired height and found a few photos I liked for reference.

Next, because the sole has thickness, let's use a different color to draw the sole. Draw a thin slab with slightly rounded corners along the green lines of the sole!

Next, draw the other parts. Most sandals are secured by a buckle at the ankle. Once roughly completed, erase the extra lines and organize the line art into the same color to check the status.

Grouping the Toes

When wearing sandals, the toes will be exposed, so it's recommended to draw the toes carefully. A simple way to think about drawing toes is to group the big toe on its own and the other four in another group. The big toe can be appropriately curved to create a lively impression, while the other toes can simply be drawn along the edge of the sole.

By following these steps, even if you aren't a seasoned veteran, you can easily draw sandals and enjoy creating refreshing fashion illustrations!
