Hello! My name is Walter and I present you a small introduction to black and white digital drawing from a paper sketch that we have done at some point, in a simple way. In my case I used a cartoon style drawing of a selfie seen by instagram.

Prepare Canvas

1- We drag an image where we have a sketch or pencil drawing that we want to convert to vectors.

We are going to use the monochrome mode, choosing the canvas size and the resolution to your liking.

I recommend not using low resolutions if the work aims for a high quality presentation.

This is how we changed our canvas properties.

And so we use the rotation options.

Finally we create a new vector layer and we are ready to ink the drawing.

Tools to use

For the line trace use the G pen, varying the brush size to give more rhythm to the drawing.

For the shadows in the mouth and on the face, use the round brush with gray color, also varying the brush sizes and changing the opacity according to taste.

It is important to see the smoothing of the line and the stabilization to achieve continuous and organic lines.

I recommend creating a new layer to separate line work from shadow and pattern work. Create a new layer and put white fill for a better view.

Shadows and Plots

For the hair I decided to use a weft, based on the Gradient Sub-tool. Using Automatic Selection in the vector layer, we select the hair area, which must be that the area is closed so that it takes all the gradient. It can be added to the selection using the SHIFT + Right Click of the mouse.

Once the selection is made, we go to our hatch layer and with the gradient controller we decide the places of light and shadow.

In tramification settings you can adjust the plot and achieve different types of effects.

We can also change the opacity of the pattern by generating other black and gray values.

Finally we are going to give lights in the hair as a reflection. In order to erase or paint on the pattern we first have to Rasterize the pattern and gradient layer. Then we are going to be able to create the lights using the eraser or a brush with white ink.

With what we have learned we can create other variants of patterns or styles for our drawings! Thanks so much for reading!!
