INTRODUCTION :

Hi guys , so this is my second post and I will be talking about all the options available under the correction layer and how we can use them on both traditional and digital art . sorry if my english is not proper now let's get into the tutorial

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BRIGHTNESS/CONTRAST :

1. ‌Brightness‌ ‌refers‌ ‌to‌ ‌the‌ ‌overall‌ ‌lightness‌ ‌or‌ ‌darkness‌ ‌of‌ ‌the‌ ‌image‌ . ‌In‌ ‌brightness‌ ‌,‌ ‌lower‌ ‌the‌ ‌

value‌ ‌darker‌ ‌the‌ ‌image‌ ‌and‌ ‌higher‌ ‌the‌ ‌value‌ ‌the‌ ‌image‌ ‌will‌ ‌light‌ ‌out‌ ‌and‌ ‌the‌ ‌colors‌ ‌which‌ ‌are‌ ‌

already‌ ‌lighter‌ ‌will‌ ‌become‌ ‌white‌ ‌ ‌

2. ‌when‌ ‌it‌ ‌comes‌ ‌to‌ ‌contrast‌ ‌,‌ ‌it‌ ‌shows‌ ‌difference‌ ‌in‌ ‌brightness‌ ‌between‌ ‌different‌ ‌objects‌ ‌in‌ ‌the‌ image.‌ ‌Lower‌ ‌the‌ ‌value‌ ‌lower‌ ‌the‌ ‌contrast‌ ‌making‌ ‌the‌ ‌image‌ ‌“plain”‌ ‌and‌ ‌higher‌ ‌the‌ ‌value‌ ‌higher‌ the‌ ‌contrast‌ ‌increasing‌ ‌the‌ ‌difference‌ ‌between‌ ‌light‌ ‌and‌ ‌dark‌ ‌objects ,‌ ‌making‌ ‌light‌ ‌object‌ ‌lighter‌ and‌ ‌dark‌ ‌objects‌ ‌darker‌ ‌.‌ ‌

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We‌ ‌mostly‌ ‌use‌ ‌the‌ ‌brightness/contrast‌ ‌layer‌ ‌on‌ ‌top‌ ‌of‌ ‌all‌ ‌layers‌ ‌and‌ ‌the‌ ‌effect-applies‌ ‌to‌ ‌the‌ ‌

whole‌ ‌illustration‌ ‌but we can also make the brightness/contrast to stay under certain layer so that the effect applies to the certain wanted areas . this can be achieved by making a new folder and making the brightness/contrast to stay under a folder

------------ ‌

If‌ ‌i‌ ‌want‌ ‌to‌ ‌darken‌ ‌the‌ ‌hair‌ ‌color‌ ‌of‌ ‌my‌ ‌character‌ instead of coloring it again i can use brightness/contrast for it for this we must do as following

Step‌ ‌1‌ ‌:‌ ‌I‌ ‌make‌ ‌sure‌ ‌all‌ ‌the‌ ‌hair‌ ‌color‌ ‌layers‌ ‌are‌ ‌under‌ ‌a‌ ‌single‌ ‌folder‌ ‌layer‌ ‌.‌If‌ ‌you‌ ‌create‌ ‌a‌ ‌

correction‌ ‌layer‌ ‌inside‌ ‌a‌ ‌layer‌ ‌folder,‌ ‌the‌ ‌effect‌ ‌will‌ ‌only‌ ‌apply‌ ‌to‌ all ‌layers‌ ‌in‌ ‌the‌ ‌same‌ ‌layer‌ ‌

folder.‌ ‌

Step‌ ‌2‌ ‌:‌ ‌Then‌ ‌i‌ ‌select‌ ‌LAYER‌ ‌>‌ ‌NEW‌ ‌CORRECTION‌ ‌LAYER‌ ‌>‌ ‌BRIGHTNESS/CONTRAST‌ then the brightness/contrast box pops up having two sliders .

Step‌ ‌3‌ ‌:‌ ‌Now ‌I‌ ‌lower‌ ‌the‌ ‌brightness‌ ‌and‌ ‌increase‌ ‌the‌ ‌value‌ of‌ ‌contrast to‌ ‌darken‌ ‌the‌ ‌hair‌ ‌.‌

After clicking “ ok “ you will notice that the brightness/contrast layer is inside the folder layer making the effect stay within the particular folder layer.

--------

The same result can be achieved by the alternative following method :

Step 1 : Select the " selection area " tool from the vertical tool section located on the left side .

Step 2 : Then select the outline of the particular area you want to apply the effect to.

Step 3: Go to LAYER > NEW CORRECTION LAYER>BRIGHTNESS/CONTRAST and adjust the values according to your decider .

(note : this method can be used for the application under correction layer )

-----------------------------------------

[NOTE: We can digitize a traditional art with a scanner or camera then in clip studio paint go to FILE > OPEN and choose the required file . ]

I mostly use my phone camera and import the traditional art to digital so the picture comes out to be really dull and kind of lifeless so to make the image brighter i use brightness/contrast

I just play with the values to bring a satisfying result

-------

-----------------

brightness/contrast is as well as useful for pencil art too . All i do is redo the same steps of going to layer > new correction layer > brightness/contrast and i increase the brightness and increase the contrast as well and as the result we get a clear and neat image of our illustration

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

HUE/SATURATION/LUMINOSITY

Hue/saturation/luminosity is an alternative representation of RGB color mode . Hue/saturation/luminosity can be used for changing the mood of the illustration because this particular application has all the colors and we can even adjust the brightness and saturation . Select LAYER > CORRECTION LAYER > HUE/SATURATION/LUMINOSITY to create a new tonal layer .

Here ,

1 .Hue = represents hue of the color by having all the coloring available in color wheel

By increasing and decreasing the values we can change the colors accordingly . The colors in the hue swift's colors exactly like the color wheel .

2.Saturation = represents vividness . saturation is an indicator of density of hue . saturation can be also referred to as intensity as it refers to the dominance of hue in a color .If we increase the value of the saturation the result will be brighter and highly vivid and as we lower the value it goes from unsaturated to grayscale .

3.Luminosity = represents brightness . Luminosity is a measure of how bright or dark a hue is . As we increase the value of luminosity the image gets brighter/lighter and as we lower the values the image goes dull/ darker or grayscale

-------------------

By particular setting or change in values of hue/saturation/luminosity we can pull off different moods in a single illustration . Even though getting a desired result might take many attempts but you know just try playing with it, try different colors , values you keep doing it over you will start to understand the different values and how you can get the desired effect .

Here's how i use hue/saturation/luminosity

First I decide what kind of situation or mood I want to bring to the illustration . let's say i want to change the color of the illustration to green and bring in a bit of afternoon effect , for that

Step1 : i make sure i am on top of all the layer and i go to layers>new correction layer> hue/saturation/luminosity

Step2: the hue/saturation/luminosity box pops up now i move the slider to right to get the green color and lower the saturation for afternoon effect then i click on ok

Step 3: then i again go to layer > new correction layer> hue/saturation/luminosity and move the hue to blue color and click ok . Now I lower the opacity of the layer .

----------------------Here i have given an example of how hue/saturation/luminosity works and how well it changes the whole scenario for illustration

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

----------------When it comes to portraits i tend to use hue/saturation/luminosity as shadow effect

1. After finishing the portrait I make a new folder layer and create a layer inside then I take a pen and choose a really dark color like greyish black and just apply the color on top of the portrait and the button leaving the center part . While applying the color I make sure not to go out of the portrait .

2.Then I take a blur brush and blur out the outline .

3. After blurring I lower the opacity of the layer to 56% .

4. Now i go to layers> new correction layer> hue/saturation/luminosity . A new window pops up then changes the values of hue making the color go from greyish black to night blue by changing hue value and by increasing saturation as well as luminosity

Then to finalize the portrait i make a new layer and change its mode to " add glow " then i take a bright vibrant color like orange and apply it to make a lighting effect . To make the lighting look realistic i lower the opacity of the layer and do some blurring and again with the same color i take a airbrush (soft) and apply it to certain areas

--------

-----------------------------------------------

I use this application for traditional art almost the same as for the digital ones . As for this painting i want to change the background so im gonna select selection tool and select the background and go to layer> new layers> hue/saturation/luminosity and change the color by changing the values in hue

-------

-------

-----------

For black and white art like pencil art hue/saturation/luminosity would bring in a really different effect here i will show you an example of how a pencil art can be made more interesting with clip studio

--------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

POSTERIZATION

In posterization, Number of levels increases and decreases the values of the image by splitting it. If we decrease the number of levels the values in the image go down and end up with saturated 2 or 3 values and if we increase the number of levels the images get many values and end up with smoother results .

As we can see increasing the number of levels, increases in value and gradient in the image .

That's all for the posterization .

------------------------------------

In traditional art i will just show how it affects the image . It kindof gives a smooth finish to the image and ofcourse more gradient as we increase the value

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

REVERSE GRADIENT

Reverse gradient inverts the colors (RGB values) of the selected layer or folder layer .

When it comes to reverse gradient we can bring really good transformation to the image but we must be careful with what image we choose to transform .

As I said we must be careful with what kind of image we choose for the reverse gradient . I mostly choose dark colored illustrations or monochrome images for the effect . Reverse gradients can come really handy in black and white images .We can reverse the black color to white and white to black .

First it's very important to understand how reverse gradient works and what kind of changes it brings to the image . As for colors, reverse gradient changes the original color to the opposite color in the color wheel

For example : it changes red color to blue and pink to green . basically it inverts the opposite colors

Most of us don't use reverse gradient because it ends up looking scary or weird but certain colors can be made better by using reverse gradient .

Here i have given an example of how i use reverse gradient ,

  - First I made a simple painting of black background and made another layer on top and painted red smokey clouds .

-Then i make sure i’m on the top layer and i go to LAYERS > NEW CORRECTION LAYER > REVERSE GRADIENT .

As we can see it can bring a cool effect to the image

---------------------------------------

As for the painting I'm gonna change the color of the cloth . since the cloth color is white and blue it will change to black and orange reflecting the opposites in the color wheel .

I select the selection tool and select the cloth and then i go to layers>new layers> reverse gradient

--------

-----------

As i mentioned before in case of black and white the reverse gradient effects puts the color inside out , making the whites change to black and black to white

here,

i take my pencil illustration and i go to layers>new correction layer> brightness/contrast to brighten the image and add a bit of contrast after clicking ok now again i go to layers>new correction layer>reverse gradient

--------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

LEVEL CORRECTION

Level correction is a method of editing using histogram; we can also change the brightness of a layer using graphs . Level correction almost does the same work as brightness/contrast but what makes level correction different is that we get to choose the part we want to darken or highlight . i mostly use level correction in digital art for finalizing by darken shadow areas and highlighting bright parts

First i will explain what are the options available in level correction and what are there uses :

(LAYERS> NEW CORRECTION LAYER> LEVEL CORRECTION and a pop up open )

HERE,

1. CHANNEL : you can select and change three available channels (RGB) ,(RED) ,(GREEN), (BLUE)

2. HISTOGRAM : The histogram displays the volume of dark parts and bright parts in the image .

3. SHADOWS :We can adjust the brightness of the image . This particular arrow takes control over dark parts or shadow parts , by dragging the arrow to the right it darkens the image and by dragging to the left it brightens the image .

4. MIDTONES: Midtone arrow takes control over the mid toned colors in the image . by dragging to left the image gets brighter and by dragging to right the image gets darker .Moving the midtone arrow does not affect the shadowtones or highlight arrow but when you move the shadowtone arrow or the highlight arrow the midtone arrow moves along with them .

5. HIGHLIGHT : Highlight arrow takes control over the lightest part of the image . by dragging to right the image gets brighter and by dragging to the left it darkens.

6. HIGHTLIGHT OUTPUT : this controls the bright parts of the image . by dragging the arrow we can change the effect . dragging to left makes the image brighter and dragging to right makes the image darker .

7. SHADOW OUTPUT : This controls the dark parts of the image . By dragging we can change and adjust effect . Dragging to left to make it brighter and drag to right to make it darker .

------now for the last portrait to the right i wanted to make the darker shades as dominant one for that

-i go to the layers> new correction layer > level correction when the level correction box pops up

-i move the midtone arrow to the right and move the shadow arrow to the right

A clip of how i did the middle one

----------------------------------------------------

----------------------------------------

As for the level correction used in traditional color art it is the same as the digital art but level correction can bring a really good effect to the pencil art or realistic arts .

For example,

After we import traditional arts i use brightness/contrast to brighten the paper but it also brightness the whole image making the pencil lines lighter so to make the pencil lines darker and clear i use level correction to darken the pencil by dragging the shadow arrow .

here's how i do it

first , i go to layer >new correction > level correction

since the graph is divided into three tones it will be easy to change the particular shade without having to change the whole image . so here i drag the shadow tone towards the right to make the pencil color darker

now i move the hightlight tone to the left to make it brighter so that the image doesn't gets dull .

-------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TONE CURVE :

Tone curve is almost the same as the level correction but it has more options and it also has a graph too . In short , tone curve is like a combo of level correction and hue because the tone curve gives us the option to edit with rgb , red , blue , green and unlike level correction , tone curve effect applies to the whole image equally .

First ,i will explain the option available in tone curve and the effects

Here,

1. CHANNEL : select the channel to choose [RGB] , [RED] , [GREEN] or [BLUE].

2. TONE CURVE : A graph to the brightness or contrast of the image . we can just drag the points to adjust . The horizontal axis in the graph is the input value and the vertical axis is the output value .

3. RESET : To reset the changes made .

-In tone curve [RGB] , if we drag the control point to the right side the image darkens and if we drag the control point to the left the image brightens .

-In the [RED] tone curve , dragging to the left brings the red color to the image and dragging to the right brings the opposite color of the red in the color wheel which is cyan .

-In [BLUE] tone curve , drag left for blue and right for yellow .

-In [GREEN] tone curve , drag left for green and right for purple/magenta .

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Here ,I have given different examples of effects that we can create using a tone curve .

Just remember to play around and experiment with the tone curve. Eventually we will know which combo of color will give good effects to the illustration .

A clip of how i do it :

i forgot to record the next step so i will just explain it . i just again change the channel to [RGB] and drag the control point to right to darken the image

-------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------It's the same as for traditional art but I will just explain the method I use in traditional arts . I mostly use a tone curve for pencil illustrations to give the paper and the pencil a browny rusty effect .

For example :

      - here I change the channel to red and drag the control point to left to bring a mild red effect .

     - then i again change the channel to RGB and increase darkness by dragging to right

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

COLOR BALANCE

Color balance is used to adjust the color of the image . first i will explain the uses of the options available .

(LAYERS> NEW CORRECTION LAYER > COLOR BALANCE )

here,

1. COLOR BALANCE : the sliders are used to move left or right to adjust the color balance of the image with available color cyan and red , magenta and green , yellow and blue .

2. COLOR LEVEL : the values of each slider are shown in color level , first box in the color level is for red and cyan . The middle one is for magenta and green and the last one is for yellow and blue . we can even input values directly in the boxes.

3. GRADIENT BALANCE : We can adjust the balance by different selected levels [shadow] , [half tone] and [highlight]

4. KEEP BALANCE : to keep the same level of brightness while editing gradient balance

I would say color balance almost does the same thing as tone curve but with more options to select the shadow tone , midtone or highlight . so here a video of how i use them

Its exactly of same use in traditional art so i will just move on to next one

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BINARIZATION:

Binarization converts the colored images to blacks and whites. Color darker than the set threshold will be converted to black , while colors brighter than the set threshold will be converted to white .

binarization comes with a slider if we move the slider to right the value of black increases and as we move the slider to left the value of whites increases

how i use them

             - i go to layers> new correction layer> binarization

            - then binarization box pops up with slider . now i just drag the slider towards right but most of the time the binarization defaulty comes with best values

----------------------------------

it would bring the same effect as digital for the colored traditional art but binarization comes handy while importing pencil line arts . i will also show you guys how we can even color underneath the traditional line art, digitally .

after importing traditional line art we can digitalize then using binarization

here's how i do it :

      - first , after importing the image i go to layer> new correction layer> brightness/contrast and move the slider to brighten the image and increase the contrast as well then i click ok .

      - then i go to layers> new correciton layer > binarization . when the binarization box pops up i adjust the slider according to the desire . so this is where we digitalize the lineart .
       - now i go the layer property ( if you don't have layer property displayed just go to window (menu) then click on layer property it will be added to your screen automatically) then i click on color then select monochrome .

        - then i click on the change expression color (black) then i click on " apply expression color of preview " . now this will make the line art (black lines) to stay and erase the white . we do this so that we can color underneath the line art

  • now i create a new folder layer and make sure all the layers are under it

  • now i go to layers> new layer> paper and select white color this will add a paper layer underneath all the layer . now we can just create a new layer above the paper layer and color in . make sure the paper layer is not inside the folder layer that we created earlier

A clip of how i do it:

--------

after coloring

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

GRADIENT MAP

Gradient map changes the color according to the density of the original color . gradient map converts the selected layer to the color that we select from the color bar . gradient maps are really useful in converting grayscale illustrations into color . first i will explain everything available in gradient map

----------------------------------------------------------------------

---------------------

1.COLOR BAR : A preview of the color

2. NODE : Node is the arrow , we can move the node or even create a new node just click on a empty space . If we want to delete a node just drag it to the left right out of the line .

3. LEFT ARROW < : Switches to the next node on the left.

4. RIGHT NODE > : Switches to the next node on right .

5. REVERSE GRADIENT : works same as the reverse gradient i explained above . it reflects the opposite color in the color wheel

6. DELETE NODE : Click on the node which u want to delete and press this button to delete

----------------------------------------------------------

---------

1. MAIN DRAWING COLOR : Uses the color selected on the color wheel as the main color . if we change the color wheel color the node color will also change

2. SUB DRAWING COLOR : uses the sub color in the palette . if we change the sub color the node color will also change .

3. SPECIFIED COLOR : We can use specified color for node color. To do that we must select the color indicator to open the color setting from where we can select our desired color or we can use the " obtain screen color pen " to select the color from the screen

---------------------------------------------------------------------

----------------

1. GRADIENT SET : We can select different available set like sky or somber shades . by click it we will get a different gradient list according to the channel .

2. GRADIENT LIST : From here we can select the gradient effect we want to apply to the image .

3. SETTINGS : Clicking in this button we can different options like delete gradient , import set , add set etc .

4. UP/DOWN : To move up and down in the gradient list .

5. REPLACE GRADIENT : It will replace the selected gradient with the gradient in the color bar

6. APPLY GRADIENT SETTING : Shows the selected gradient in the color bar

7. DUPLICATE GRADIENT : will duplicate the selected gradient .

8. ADD GRADIENT : will add a the gradient in the color bar to the gradient list

9. DELETE GRADIENT : Will delete the selected gradient .

--------------------------------------------------------------

---------------------

-This is used for mixing colors

-The horizontal axis of the graph indicates the position of the node

-The vertical axis represents the color mixing ratio with respect to the node at the right

-We can adjust the color using the control point

-------------------------------------------------------------------

HOW I USE THE GRADIENT MAP :

  • first i draw my illustration in grayscale . after being done with my portrait i use selection tool to select the places where i want to add skin tone .

  • then i go to layers> new correction layer > gradient map . then the gradient box pops up

  • i already have my skin tone gradient saved so i click on it and just do some adjustments

  • now again using selection tool i select eyes and lips where i don't want the skin tone to get in and i just erase them
  • now i make sure i am on the layer below the new gradient layer that i made for the skin . then i go to layer > new correction layer > gradient map then click on shadow gradient that i have saved

  • after clicking ok now i make sure i'm on the skin tone gradient layer then i again open gradient map and select gradient for the hair after clicking ok i erase the effect that is applied on the skin too
  • I repeat same steps for the lip and i go in and make a new layer and color the eyes

-------

--------------------------------

I use gradient map on almost all of my portraits . below i will give more examples of how i use gradient map

here i am using gradient for my 2D portrait . In this one is will use the default available gradient , so i go to layer > new correction layer > gradient map and click on " somber shade (red) .

then to make the lineart back to black , I click on the node and go to the color indicator box and choose the desired color

then i notice which color shade is around the cheek area and select that color in color bar and make a new node and again i go the color indicator box and pink color for blush effect and after clicking ok i just erase off the areas i don't the effect to be

-------

-----------------------------------------------------------------

I am one of those who isn't good at painting clouds so for that gradient map is a lifesaver as usual i draw my illustration in grayscale and i open gradient map . clip studio already has a gradient set just for sky so i pick one of them and that's it

------------------------------------------------------

----------------------------------

It's just same for the traditional art

--------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CONCLUSION :

So that it all i know about correction layers i hope this was useful before closing up this tutorial i will talk about common things in all the options under correction layer

1. If we click on the small box inside the layer we can change the setting of the correction layer we used

2. If we click on this box we can erase or add the areas where we don't/do want the effect .

---------------------------------------------------
