Introduction

Hi everyone and welcome to my Clip Studio TIPS about #HowToChibi - drawing chibis in Clip Studio Paint!

Before we start with drawing, let's meet ourselves with the notion of a chibi.

Chibi is actually a Japanese way of character art, style of a human caricature based on exaggerating (characters made as chibis are very short and small and they have very large heads, special hairstyles, chubby limbs and a lot of decorations, also they have special - shaped eyes that are very big and shimmery), and it is often used in manga and anime. The word "chibi" is used to describe something short, cute and chubby at the same time, no matter is it a human, an animal or an object, and it actually comes from the Japanese verb "禿びる" (chibiru), which means "to wear out and become shorter". Regular chibis are common to pixies and even referred to kawaii (cute) style.

Every good drawing starts just with a good sketch. Even the greatest artistic masterpieces in history have been a sketch at first. To draw a good chibi, you have to know how to draw the right sketch for it (look at the picture up!). My recommendation is to use some position of a drawing doll model made of wood. I constantly use it in regular character art as the help when I have to draw the sketch of a human. You can also use it in chibi art on the same principle, only you have to imagine that the doll was lower and chubbier (look at the picture below!). You only put the doll in the position you want to draw your chibi in.

Now when we all know some basics, let's start!

Basic tips for drawing

  • Make the first look of your chibi by simply adding correct lines you want across the chubby sketch you made. Take a special focus on head and hair. Make a correct decision when choosing a hairstyle - I recommend short hair, especially if you're not a pro.

  • Do not erase your sketch yet. You may need it later, and the sketch can sometimes also be a good bonus and artistic note on your drawing.

  • Girls are the best options when drawing chibis because they can have more details and decorations and make a more interesting drawing than male.

  • Don't be afraid of making a mess. Make the hair a little more wild, playful. Make the skirt/dress flutter.

  • Don't forget to make visible chubby parts of the whole body.

  • Don't draw eyes yet!

Mistakes

You can use Undo or an eraser if you did a mistake with some body parts' positions (like me, below). Or you can rotate it so you don' t have to draw it all over again.

Bolding

  • Draw fatter lines across the thinner ones once when you are sure everything is made the way you want it to be. Again, put focus on hair and head!

  • Now you can draw the eyes! Make them bigger than typical eyes you would draw to a normal human. Draw them with the kind of lines you pulled before bolding. Also, draw the mouth (typical Japanese - way mouth like on the picture). Noses aren't important - you will add a tiny nose after coloring.

  • Shade and slowly start drawing details!

Coloring

  • Use Brush (B) to color the hair the way you want. This brush will make the hair look shimmery and glittery.

  • Try making as much as contrast as you can while coloring.

  • When you are drawing a girl, do not forget - not everything in the female world is "pink"!

  • When coloring the main decoration - the one that seems to be more beautiful and important than the other ones - use odd colors that may be well compared and able to distinguish among other things.

  • DO NOT BE AFRAID OF EXAGGERATING - CHIBI ART IS BASED ON IT!

  • Color all the regular stuff with thicker pencil.

  • Zoom in when coloring eyes (some odd color also recommended) for a better precision and add some empty white space in pupils shaped as circles as a glow.

-Use thicker pencil to create a fabric experience on clothing.

Find the right mix of different colors for skin, something among yellow, orange, white and pink

Decorating and finishing

  • Put as much decorations as you can

  • Put some skin details that will make a chibi even cuter (blush on the cheeks, for example

  • Make clothes and shoes modern, with some bows, for example

  • Express different emotions on the face (look at the picture below)

  • Use Decorations - without fear (look at the picture below)

  • Make some shades over color again

-For the big finale, color the corners with dominating color - first with pen, then with thick pencil.

If you did everything right...

It will be similar to this!

Thank you, that would be all now!
