Introduction

Hi!

Welcome to my tutorial. I will discuss the tips on drawing a character of a dog from different views using Clip studio paint. I hope you will learn from this tutorial.

Let’s get started!

Look For References

Search and choose reference photos.

Pick photos that will show similar features of a particular dog.

Take pictures of your dog from different views if you have any.

You may search for photos of a dog's front, side, and back views while sitting and standing.

It is crucial to maintain a consistent character of a dog. Hence, choose the photos for your illustrations of your dog.

View grid

To maintain the symmetry of your drawing you can use a grid.

Click view and grid.

Make a sketch

Make a sketch using the airbrush.

Make the outline

Use the shapes using the figure (U) tool to create the head, body, and parts of the dog.

Click the new vector layer icon

Name the layer sketch/outline.

Click figure U.

Draw using the Ellipse and continuous curve without fill.

The brush size I use is 4.5. You can use any size as long as there’s space to draw other lines.

Under tool navigation, use the tools to manipulate, fix and form the lines.

Click the control point tool to manipulate lines.

Click the adjust line width tool to thicken or narrow your line.

You can choose under the Tool property

Front view

Front view: Dog in sitting position

To make the dog’s face cute, make the face chubby, the eyes round and bigger with a space between, the eyebrows slightly above the eyes, ears round and in an angled position. You can make the ears long or short depending on your reference photos.

Create a body of the dog with both legs and feet in front. In the picture, the hind limbs are close to the forelimbs and there’s a space between the forelimbs.

Take note that the curved lines and round edges make the dog features look soft.

Observe your reference. Draw the dog’s distinct facial expressions and limb movements based on your reference. You can put more details if you prefer.

Front view: Dog in a standing position

In a standing position, create smaller limbs and paws using curved lines.

Both limbs are smaller and the hind legs are drawn with more smooth and soft edges.

Side view

Side view: Dog in a sitting position

In the side view and a sitting position, keep a big and round eye and draw a smile on the dog’s face.

The limbs are still round and small. Limit sharp edges. Draw the hind limb slightly closer to the forelimbs and leave a space in between.

If you prefer, make the body smaller while the head is slightly bigger.

Side view: Dog in a standing position

In the side view and standing position, draw the dog's body with curvatures, and round edges. Make it look chubby.

The eyes are always round and big. Keep a smiling expression.

The limbs are short and farther from each other.

Back view

Keep the important details of your dog’s character. Maintain the shape of the head, ears, and hind limbs.

You can draw various head gestures or movements of your dog’s character while the dog is sitting in the back view.

In the back view and standing position, draw the buttocks slightly bigger than the head. Keep the round and curved lines. Make the dog chubbier to make it cute.

Remember you may draw the head in a different view. Always maintain the consistent features of your dog’s character.
