How Do I Draw Hair~

Salutations everyone!

I’m Sato♥

Today I will show you ‘How do I Draw Hair’, it’s a very ribbony method that I do use ^^

Step 1 the SKETCH!!!

In my methods while doing hair to any being, I do 1-2 sketches before step 2, mapping out where everything is going to. Including hair~

I don’t outright sketch each strand of hair, or it would be hard for me to see where everything goes in this map, especially before I do any kind of lining or coloring. However, I do a simple form sketch where the hair will be at and even do the line in a different color.

Step 2 Lining~

Once you finish step 1, we’re moving on to the Lining process. In my method of doing all this, I separate layers, so the doll here will have its own layer while the hair is all in separated layers. Especially in this canvas. I use the ribbon method for drawing hair. I learned the technique only a few months ago, and now, to this day, it has helped me improve my skills.

Step 3 Coloring~

Coloring, this doll was fun and did use colors randomly; though, three colors go into a composition analogous exp: Pink to Blue to Green. (The background does have purple somewhere) Though with baby blue chosen as a hair color, I get a little darker color to the baby blue, and did a pattern when coloring hair.

I also have the line layer separated from the colored layer, so in the future, I can color the line layer to a darker blue so it isn’t black.

Step 4!

Shading n Lighting

After handling the coloring and coloring the line layer, I merge the two layers together, still separated from everything else. Then I make a layer above the hair and I clip the layer that’s above and make it multiply and use the paintbuck make sure you’re using the hair color for the hair. Then paint the whole layer in that color, in a multiply layer, everything will be darker. Grab any of your brushes and make it transparent and clean away the dark area.

Once after doing the shading, make the opacity lower (I suggest around 60-40 demanding of the scenery). Then merge the multiply layer to the hair, then make a new layer and clip it, we’ll make this layer to Glow Dodge. Then use any brush to paint heavily on the hair (yes, it will be bright), once finished, tone down to the opacity where it doesn’t hurt your eyes, though it looks good.

Step 6 Effects

So I usually put some kind of effects in some of my characters’ hair, if they were a normal being, then I may not. However, since this character is a doll, I went ahead and made her hair sparkly.

This step is always optional ^^

Final step!

Now that we’re approaching the final step with hair, after handling the background. All the doll’s layers are already merged into one, as I make a new layer to clip, doing one more multiply layer; however, this time around reason I did more shade and lighting is because there is now a background and scenery, and I wanted to add contrast to the piece. This includes lighting.
