When you're creating a particularly long autoaction (one that, for example, might need to scan artwork in) it's useful to add a "save" to the auto action, you can add one at the start or at the end of the entire action.
If the action proves disastrous and you wish to go back, you can simply undo until the previous point and re-save.
I have multiple auto actions, each one Saves the file.
