LINE ART made easy with Clip Studio Paint !
INTRO
Helloooo lovely people ! My name is Yomehlo, and today I’ll show you how a beginner, can exel in drawing perfect line art using clip studio paint. So Let’s get started!
Before we know more about drawing in clip studio paint, we should learn more about basics of drawing good and smooth lines. Generally, basics of line art includes five, major elements. Line stabilisation, pen pressure, strokes, dimensions and thickness. I know, it sounds complicated but I promise, you all will get it in no time.
LINE STABILIZATION
Let’s start with line stabilisation. Stable lines are key to professional looking line art. As an artist, you don’t want wobbly looking line art like this, am I right? Instead you will want smooth flowy lines like this. Don’t worry cause clip studio paint is to your rescue!
There is a feature available in clip studio paint, known as stabilisation, under tool properties of brush that you are using. You can set it as high as you want. I like to keep it till 22. This will give you that smooth finish, even if your hand is a little shaky.
PEN PRESSURE
Second point to remember is pen pressure. Pen pressure is not available on all devices. So before buying any gadget to do digital art, make sure that it supports pen pressure or not. When you have a pen and tablet which allows pressure, you are ready to put magic in your art.
In simple words, pen pressure is, putting less weight will produce thin line and more pressure results in thicker line. Note that, we are producing thin and thicker line without having a need to change the brush size!
Now you may wonder, why is it important? Well, take a look at these two pictures. One with and one without using pen pressure. Picture without pen pressure looks monotonous while the other looks appealing.
You can practice pen pressure by this simple exercise. Start from top of the page and start drawing a wavy line. Put light weight as you start and slowly start putting more and more weight, till you reach the bottom. Alternatively, start putting more pressure on top and get light handed as you go down. Finish atleast 1 such page every day and you are GOOD TO GO!
DIMENSIONS
it's time to learn about dimension. when we talk about dimension, we think of objects closer to us and further away from us. simple rule of dimension is objects closer to us will have thicker line art, while things further away from us will have thin line art. it's that simple.
look at these balls and look how I am drawing it. first ball closest to us have thick line and as we go behind it gets thinner, giving it a 3D effect. all you need to remember is thickness of the line. With this you can give life to your drawings.
THICKNESS OF LINE
which brings us to our last element thickness. when we draw line art we keep the details light, detailed and a bit complicated . look at one of the panels of my webtoon notice how jaw of the man is thick while details like nose and lips are thinner. The object containing the details should have thicker line art as compared to details inside. You can notice this variation in anime industry too.
to understand this concept more let's draw line art for the sketch of this chibi. first let’s draw its jaw. and now the details like nose eyes and lips. look how the features are thinner comparatively to the jawline. That’s the effect we want to see. Now let’s do his hair. we will do curvy strokes how we learned in this video making it smooth and nice. But wait! Every hair strand looks of equal thickness which we have to avoid. So should I panic and start all over again? Answer is absolutely no! You don’t have to worry, as you have this amazing tool by your side. Go to tool bar and you can find correct line tool. With this we can easily adjust the thickness of our line art. Isn’t clip studio a gift of god! But please note that, in order to use this tool effectively you must use a vector layer. In fact you must use vector layer for line art in every case possible. You can find vector layer right beside new raster layer in layers window. Vector layers are absolutely amazing for line art.
SMOOTH STROKES
now it's turn to learn the most important element, Smooth strokes. many artist break lines while drawing line art which is a big no! you should try to draw one line in one go. breaking lines make your line art look unprofessional which you don't want.
you can practice drawing strokes by making Swift semi curves or circles continuously just like this. another exercise is by making small circles on whole page just as demonstrated. try to do this exercise more than thrice per day and this will be enough for you to achieve smooth strokes without any breaking.
TRICKS
Now let's talk about few tricks to get fast at drawing line art while line arting this sketch. first we need to change colour of the sketch layer or folder. We can do so by clicking on change layer colour button in layer window. Now lower the opacity of sketch layer and add a new vector layer above it. Select your favourite line art brush. You can find plenty in clip studio store. Brush that I use has id 1706442.
Brush that i use has id number 1706442.
If you get any line positioned wrongly, you can select it using operations tool or by clicking on line by holding control key. Now you can transform the line accordingly.
To add details, zoom in the canvas. I suggest that you all learn shortcuts for flip, rotate, zoom in and out and undo to make your work faster.
Another trick is, Instead of using erase tool, you can transform your brush into an eraser by selecting transparent colour from colour window.
If you want to erase any specific intersection of lines smoothly, you can use vector eraser. Here is the example how you can use it. With this you don't have any worry to overextend your stroke.
