Greeting

Welcome to this little tutorial!

Hi, I'm Lyn and here I'll be explaining step by step how I usually draw fire in case you find it useful and decide you want to try this method, so let's get started!

A Little Theory!

First, let's go with a little theory about fire and flames. It is important to understand that normally the flame is usually divided into three layers, which is good to know because here are the colors that we will use and their opacity or saturation.

1.(clear) internal zone

2.(middle) intermediate zone

3.(with saturation) external zone.

The layers that are usually more on the outside tend to have slightly more saturated and vivid colors since they are more exposed to oxygen in the air, which causes oxidation and makes them look saturated.

In the end, regardless of what color we are going to paint the fire, taking into account the layers mentioned above and their intensity are the basis of a good result.

Now, how to paint fire?

Let's go with the classic orange flame as the first example. We will start with intense colors and go for lighter ones later. Here are the steps:

1. First make a small sketch to guide you and lower the opacity of the layer you draw it on.

2. Then select the next brush モデペパステル/縦 (ID:1683127). I highly recommend it for this because of its texture and way of mixing. Below is the setup I have right now if you want to use it.

3. Now: New layer>normal. This will be Layer 3 of the flame, so paint the base there a deep color. The strokes can be fast and disorganized, it will give you a touch.

4. Select: "Moldable Rubber". That if I'm not mistaken, it comes by effect with CSP, below the configuration that I use.

5. Think about the way you will give the flame, the idea is that it has fine finishes at the tips as fire usually has. Look at the red lines in the fifth step of the image to give you an idea.

6. Now erase gently and see the shape you get. Also, the rubber leaves little pixels around it that give it a special touch, so I highly recommend using this tool.

7. Create: New Layer>normal. This will be Layer 2, make sure it is on top of Layer 3 and select a lighter color for it.

8. With the first brush you are going to paint a smaller flame inside the first one.

9. Gently erase again and shape.

10. Now, create: New Layer > Vivid Light. This will be Layer 1, so its color will be lighter and we will give it the intense light effect to make it stand out.

11. Again you will take the first brush and paint them a smaller flame inside. Then think about the shape you will give it. It should not be very large as it will overshadow the others.

12. Erase until the Layer 1 flame is small and fine.

13. I recommend adding small details (like dots) in this layer to give a better effect.

14. Although we already have the usual 3 layers in the flame that were explained at the beginning, I recommend the following: New layer> add brightness> lower opacity.

15. Select the Airbrush > Soft tool and pick a lighter color than Layer 1. Let's add some extra light.

16. With the airbrush, make a long stroke on top of all the drawing. You will see a soft light around.

17. Think about the shape of this extra light.

18. Use the eraser and gently erase around it.

19. As a final touch, do the following: go back to layer 3 and on top of it create: New Layer> Overlay> Snap to Bottom Layer. We will give a little intensity to the fire.

20. After selecting a saturated reddish color, you'll see which edges to smoothly apply the color to.

21. Finally, paint the edges and that's it!

Summary

To summarize the above, let's use the blue flame as an example, we will follow the same procedure as in the first example and only change the colors for this case, I will use the same layers as in the previous one.

farewell

Well, I hope you find it useful and I'm sorry if my explanation got confusing at some point, it's my first time doing something like a tutorial, so I may have failed to explain clearly at some point.

Anyway, thanks so much for reading!ꉂꉂ (ᵔᗜᵔ)
