By using filters to finish the coloring of your illustration, you can create a sense of unity in the overall color tone and add eye-catching effects for social media.

Even if you haven't decided on the effect you want to use, it’s easy to experiment with previews, so try to find the effect that works for you!

Filters can be applied to raster layers whose display color is set to Color.

Filters can be applied within a selection area or to the entire canvas.

1. Quick Filters

Select and apply a filter to change the overall tone of your illustration.

You can select Quick Filters from the Filter menu.

If you want to apply a color filter only to the selected layer, select Apply to current layer.

If you want to apply it to the entire illustration, select Apply to all (create merged layer).

How to use Quick Filters

The Quick Filters are as follows: Vivid, Warm, Cool, Lemonade, Cobalt Blue, Aquamarine, Aurora, Sepia, and Monotone. By simply selecting a thumbnail, you can easily change the color to create a unified look on your canvas.

By selecting a thumbnail, you can also preview what the result will look like. Choose a filter that suits your illustration by previewing it.

For example, to create a cold, night-timey atmosphere, we’ll use the “Cobalt Blue” filter.

The entire illustration can be easily edited to create an atmosphere that appears to be tinged with blue and illuminated by moonlight.

Further, you can adjust the intensity of the filter using the “Strength" slider at the bottom.

Strength: Left 0, Center 50, Right 100

Make tonal corrections in the Adjust tab

Adjust the following values with sliders in the Adjust tab: Brightness, Contrast, Hue, Saturation, Warmth, Tint, and Sharpness.

It is ideal for making tonal corrections to a finished illustration, as you can adjust multiple parameters while simultaneously observing the changes in the illustration.

You can also fine-tune the color tone after using a Quick Filter.

Below we have adjusted the example image to make it more vivid.

By lowering the warmth, we created a cool color scheme, and by increasing the sharpness, the lines and colors became more distinct.

Note:

You can compare the original image with the processed image by tapping the icon in the bottom left.

2. Quick Effects

Quick Effects allows you to select and apply filters that enhance the texture of illustrations or extract lines.

Quick Effects can be selected from the Filter menu.

If you want to apply the effect only to the selected layer, select Apply to current layer.

If you want to apply it to the entire illustration, select Apply to all (create merged layer).

Using Quick Effects

Quick Effects includes the following effects: Blur, Sharpness, Artistic, Retro film, Color, Noise, and Extract lines. You can add effects to illustrations by just by selecting the one you want to use.

By selecting a thumbnail, you can also preview what the result will look like. Choose a filter that suits your illustration by previewing it.

After selecting a filter, you can adjust the parameters for each function using sliders.

Extracting lines

You can extract line art from an illustration. Use this filter to digitally color your traditional illustrations.

You can import images by taking a photo of a traditional drawing with your smartphone or another device.

With the imported images layer selected, use the “Extract Lines” filter from the Filter menu > Quick Effects > Apply to current layer to extract line art on a transparent background.

Note:

Even if the background of an image is grayed out by using Convert brightness to opacity in the Tonal Correction menu, the “Extract lines” filter will still be able to make the background transparent.

After applying the filter, you can adjust the thickness of the line art using the slider. The larger the value, the more distinct and bold the extracted lines will be.

Strength: Left 20, Right 200

Chromatic aberration (Radial/Lateral)

Use this to express the phenomenon of color distortion caused by light with different wavelengths. The illustration becomes eye-catching with fringes of vibrant colors along line edges.

Noise (Color/Gray)

Use this to add a noise effect that resembles an old photo. This filter is useful for when you want to add a rough texture to an illustration.

Retro film (Vintage, Modern, Warm)

You can create the appearance of noise and fading of film camera images by applying both chromatic aberration and noise to the selected layer. You can give your illustration a retro atmosphere.

Gaussian blur, Radial blur, and Motion blur

You can use three types of “Quick effects” blur filters.

Gaussian Blur allows you to adjust the blurring range numerically and transform image borders and sharp areas into a smooth image. It is useful for blurring the background or surroundings to add depth to an illustration.

Radial blur allows you to smooth the image by averaging it into concentric circles. You can create a sense of dynamism in the illustration.

With Motion blur, you can blur the borders and distinct areas of an image in a specific direction, transforming it into a smooth image. Use it to express quick movements in one direction.

Sharpness

This filter enhances the contrast of lines and makes the image sharper. Use it to make the touch of the illustration more distinct.

Artistic (Color and lines, Color only, Lines only)

Add an illustration-like effect with these filters. You can create a brushstroke-like texture or extract only the lines of a photo. When you want to use a photo as a background for an illustration, using this filter will help blend the photo with the illustration.
