Starting from Clip Studio Paint Ver. 3.2, you can now directly import videos taken on your tablet.

In this tutorial, we will introduce how to create a simple 3-second animation using the tablet version of Clip Studio Paint PRO (EX). Import your favorite video and add hand-drawn animations to it!

The animation feature is available in Studio Mode.

Please refer to the following tutorial for instructions on how to switch from Simple Mode to Studio Mode.

Getting ready to make an animation

Create a canvas

Tap File menu > New.

When the New dialog box opens, set the Project to Illustration, and enter the video’s Width and Height.

In this case, we will use the default setting of 1080p, which is often used by camera apps.

Check the checkbox for Create animated illustration.

Items for drawing animation will be displayed.

Set the Number of cels to "24" and the Frame rate to "8fps".

Confirm that the playback time is "3.0 seconds".

By setting the Frame rate to "8fps", one second of animation will be portrayed by 8 frames.

So for a 3-second animation, you will have to draw pictures on 24 cels.

Please refer to the following tutorial for more detailed explanations on frame rates and animation:

After completing the settings, tap OK to create a new canvas.

Show the Timeline palette

A track for the animation folder is created on the Timeline palette of the created canvas.

The Animation folder contains 24 cels.

If you don’t see the Timeline palette, tap Window menu > Timeline to display it.

Importing a video

Import a video taken with your camera.

Add a video track to the Timeline palette

Make sure that the first frame in the Timeline palette is selected.

Tap File menu > Import > From photo library (From device on Android tablets).

Note:

If you want to import videos that are not in the Photos app on your iPad or iPhone, tap the File menu > Import > Movie to open the File app.

Select and import the desired video from the file selection screen.

After importing the video, several messages regarding the file format will be displayed.

If you want to import the audio included in the video, tap Yes.

When a message appears stating that the video is being treated as a file object, tap OK.

The video track will be imported as a file object onto the Timeline palette.

Note that if the original file of the loaded video is deleted or moved to a different storage location, it will not play correctly.

Please refer to this article for more detailed explanations on file objects:

The audio is imported on a separate track as an audio layer.

If you want to work with the sound off, hide the audio layer.

Hint: Trim long videos before importing them.

Importing videos with long playback time will slow down the performance.

It will be easier to work if you trim the scene you want to animate using the default photo app on your tablet and then load it into Clip Studio Paint.

Add drawings to your video

We will create an animation while referring to the movement of video.

Select a cel and start drawing

When you select a cel in the Timeline palette, the animation on the canvas will also move according to the number of frames.

Try drawing pictures on the cels in order, following the movement of the video on the canvas.

Choose your favorite brush and color to match your art style.

Select cel "1" and draw a picture using the video as a reference.

Continue by selecting cel "2" and draw another picture.

Note:

When the Enable onion skin button on the Timeline palette is activated, the images of the previous and next cels will be displayed transparently. Turn it on if you want to refer to the movement of the previous and next cels, or turn it off if you want to refer only to video movement.

Draw pictures in all cels corresponding to the frames you wish to animate in the same way.

If you want to check the movement, tap the Play/Stop button on the Timeline palette.

The animation synchronized to your video is complete!

Exporting the animation

On tablets, you can export the finished animation directly to social media or other platforms from the File menu > Quick Share.

Note:

On PC, you can export a video file in mp4 format by selecting File menu > Export animation > Movie.

Please refer to this article for detailed instructions on how to export a video:
