How to draw FUR COATS !
Introduction
Hello everyone!
I’m Kouanto a digital/webcomic artist from Greece, and today I will be sharing my tips on creating winter apparel on Clip Studio Paint.
Clip Studio Brushes
In order to make my life easier as a webcomic artist, I more often than not try to use pre-made clip studio brushes. This is what I did in this tutorial, in order to create the fur coat easily.
I accessed the clip studio assets website, entered the word fur and I downloaded the first and third brushes.
(Though you can download any other one you want and experiment on your own.)
But for the shake of the tutorial, let’s download the “Fur brush set” and the “Skin glare light”. (1st and 3d assets in the popular tab)
Shape and Texture
Before we move along, we need to talk about the basics. Winter apparel, like any piece of clothing have two important components to keep in mind; Shape and material.
The shape encompasses the silhouette of the outfit such as the length, the thickness and any details it many have that make up its general shape. The material on the other hand is about the fabric, the color and the texture of our clothing.
And while the shape is important on its own, especially the texture can be easily replicated with the use of the appropriate clip studio paint asset brush!
Add design details such as collars, buttons, pockets, cuffs, hoods, extra length, and a snug fit to show the extra bulk and warmth. You can also use texture and patterns to indicate a heavier or seasonal fabric that’s suitable for frigid winter days.
Using the “Fur brush set” we downloaded before and adding a few more details we can easily make a fur coat even with a stick figure in only a few strokes!
With a secondary brush we can later on add in more details such us folds and creases
Here we can see how different fur can look using any brush from the same brush set we downloaded before. (Feel free to play and use whichever you like depending on your design!)
Fur Coat in Illustration!
Now that we finished with a few of the basics, let’s see how this technique could be used in an actual illustration!
Sketching
After coming up with an idea for our piece, we start with sketching our character in the fur coat.
In this stage, especially if you are a beginner I would advice you to have at least one reference image, to know how you want your fur coat to be. Sketch out your character and using your reference try to replicate the basics shapes into your art.
Remember, there’s no need to dwelve on the details yet!
Inking Colouring the Character
For the shake of this tutorial, I inked and colored my character first before even inking/ coloring the fur coat, but feel free to follow whichever order works best for you!
Fur Coat
Using the 5th brush from the fur crush set that we downloaded, we proceed to paint over the fur of the coat (watch the video for more details)
In this stage we only have to make sure that the outline colour is different (and ideally darker) than the fill colour of the fur. I used a dark reddish brown as the first colour and a lighter beige one for the fur.
Make sure to paint first the places that are further in the back!
Then with an even lighter colour I painted the base parts of the coat (Using the colour fill selection tool)
Shading/ Rendering
This is how the picture turned out, after adding a new layer for shading and a few highlights.
For the shading, I used a multiply layer set to a lower opacity and coloured the basic shapes.
For the highlights I created a new layer and set it to add
Then, to make the fur look a bit more realistic, I used the fur brush from the “Skin glare light” set that we downloaded
I lightly brushed with it the areas where the light hits, all in a new layer, set to add glow.
Final Illustration
After adding a background and a few more adjustments, this is how the final piece turned out to be!
Remember, some times, especially when time runs against you (when you’re making a weekly webcomic) less is more!
There are so many brushes that can help you achieve what you want in much less time!!
