The selection tools allow us to delimit the area in which we are going to draw, edit, color, cut and a long etcetera. ClipStudio Paint offers a wide variety of work possibilities and in this tutorial we will focus on one of the most powerful: the selection brushes, which worked alternatively with the selection layers will allow us great versatility, cleanliness and control of the final finish.

Illustrating with selection tools

set lasso fill to draw

To begin, we will use the lasso fill to draw, in order to focus on the silhouette of the layout without being distracted by details, paying more attention to its volume and expression.

Configure the stability of the lasso fill.

As we want to have ease and expression in the lasso fill we will put a low stabilization.

Let's draw!

Now try to generate silhouettes and trace, as if you were doing it with a pencil, but letting each contour close as you draw.

You can use the eraser to refine the line and add more strokes until you achieve a satisfactory result, it will be drawn by approximation.

Once the concept is understood, we begin to draw the tree.

Satisfied with the tree?, excellent, now we decrease the opacity of the layer... and create a higher one.

The tree grows leaves!

We are going to trace a group of leaves with the lasso fill tool, refining with the eraser until we are satisfied, you can experiment with your own types of leaves.

We select the leaves and create a brush.

Now in the Pen selection toolset, you can see that I have a lot of brushes and I'm going to choose one that has a default setting.

I duplicate it and in this new brush I change the color and name of the thumbnail to differentiate it.

Then in the settings window I search for the name of the pattern that I had previously drawn.

We then proceed to configure the brush.

We draw the line on the foliage of the tree.

In the top bar we display the “select” tab

And we go to “convert to selection layer”

In this way the program saves the layout for later use.

showing in the layers window with a dotted green box, denoting that that selection was saved.

We repeat the processes seen so far creating selection layers for the throne.

With the lasso fill we create the grass pattern and select it to generate a new brush pattern, just as we did with the foliage brush.

After configuration, we use the selection brush to trace the field on which the tree sits.

It is registered as a selection layer in the same way as was previously done with the foliage and trunk.

Sky and mountains.

It's time to paint!

I leave the brush used in the tutorial published on my profile.

listed as “sargent painter”.

Selection and paint layer

I begin to select the previously saved layers (those converted into selection layers), leaning on the green dotted box and clicking on it, the layers will be activated, immediately appearing the selection that I had initially created for each element of this tutorial: foliage, trunk, grass, etc.

With the active and hidden selection, a general volume of the tree's foliage begins to be given, starting from a dark base green, gradually lightening this to create a volume similar to that of a ball for each group of leaves.

I create a lower layer than the trunk selection and proceed in the same way as with the foliage, starting with a dark color and illuminating and lightening the color with successive passes to create the volumes.

I continue with the grass, in this region to achieve various textures I use different selection brushes, here it is a matter of experimenting and exploring the possibilities of creating and downloading brushes and converting them to selection brushes.

This variety of patterns will give richness in textures by slightly alternating the color tone.

In the shade of the tree...

The shadow is created with a round tip selection brush and in the brush tip shape tab we adjust the hardness variable by decreasing it, to achieve a soft edge effect, with a softened finish similar to that of an airbrush.

This hardness option is only available on round tip brushes.

To generate a three-dimensional effect on the tree, work will be done using the same selection brush for the foliage but by sectors.

Lightening the green with a portion of yellow.
