In this tutorial, we will explain how to digitize a draft drawn on traditional paper and how to continue the pencil touch to complete the painting.

Some friends can't give up the touch of traditional paper painting and want to try the convenience and speed of digital painting. This is the right time to read this tutorial! Use the line draft of the paper draft to be exported, and then use brushes with similar textures to color, to achieve the continuation of the traditional painting feel, and create bold creations based on your favorite textures!

So let’s try it together!

Step 1: Make a pencil draft on paper

Draw a draft of what you like on paper. When taking pictures, pay attention to the uniform and sufficient light source. If you have a scanning device, it is best to scan it.

Step 2: Open the photo using CLIP STUDIO PAINT

Step 3: Change Luminance to Transparency

Select [Edit]-[Convert Brightness to Transparency] to turn the photo into a transparent background. Pay attention to check whether the layer thumbnail has been converted into a transparent layer.

Step 4: Binarize the draft and extract the line draft

Select [Edit]-[Hue Compensation]-[Binarization] to binarize the photo, adjust the value to make the line drawing clearer, and extract the line drawing

Sometimes keeping some messy lines is also a unique artistic effect. Since there is paper texture in the photo, binarization will produce black noise, which can be erased with the eraser tool.

Step 5: Digital Coloring

Large areas are used with chalk and small areas with pencils for coloring, imitating the strokes of real drawing on paper. Be careful when overlaying and coloring, use a darker color for overlaying, otherwise the loose white spots in the brush made of chalk and pencil materials will disappear and the colors will be blurred together. Achieve digitization of hand drawings.
