I have been one of the people who struggled with converting hand-drawn line drawings into electronic paintings. I am very happy to share my personal experience and teach you "How to convert hand-drawn line drawings into electronic paintings", so that everyone can get a good solution after reading this tutorial.

Step 1: Open your traditional hand-drawn file

It is recommended to take photos of traditional hand-painted works by arranging them so that the lines will not be distorted or the quality of the work will be affected. My personal experience is to directly use the camera function on a mobile phone to take pictures and transfer them to a device that can use this software.

Open the file in Clip Studio Paint.

※You can find the file through "File" → "Open", as shown in Figure 1 below.

Step 2: Correct the lines

Since traditional hand-drawn lines are not obvious, my method is to use "binarization" to roughly make them obvious.

※You can go to "Edit" → "Hue Compensation" → "Binarization", as shown in Figure 2 below.

The threshold value of the window that pops up is 127. Since you can see no missing lines in the preview state, this value is used directly.

※To confirm that the wireless line is missing, press "OK".

Step 3: Add new layers

Because the hand-drawn file is directly converted into a binary state, there are some stray lines, so creating a new draft layer can ensure the quality of the electronic painting work.

※There is a shortcut icon for adding "bitmap layer" or "vector layer" below the layer block window in the right column. Select one and click the icon.

Step 4: Set the draft layer

My habit is to use "Fill" on the newly added layer to select white as the background color of the electronic painting work, click and hold the layer and move it to the bottom of the layer column, move the mouse over the newly added layer and right-click. Select "Set Layer" → "Set as Draft Layer"

Step 5: Lighten the density of the original layer

After selecting the original image layer, go to the upper right corner to adjust the layer display density to around 25%-40% to facilitate the creation of clean electronically drawn manuscript lines.

Step 6: Create layers of electronic drawing manuscripts

At the bottom of the layer block window on the right column, there is a shortcut icon for adding a "bitmap layer" or "vector layer". Select one and click the icon. I simply trace and trace the hand-drawn lines and make detailed adjustments.

The traced original image file can be closed for viewing first, and the electrical drawing lines can be directly inspected.

※For steps one to six, please refer to the video tutorial below.

Step Seven: Easily Color Your Electric Painting Works

After completing the electric line drawing, you can move on to digital coloring. Please refer to the time-lapse video below for the detailed coloring process. I will not go into details about the process, but the finished product can be seen in the picture below.

Thank you for watching my teaching. I hope it will help those who are faced with the dilemma of converting traditional hand-painted works into electronically painted works. I am Meizi Oatmeal, please give me your advice!
