Introduction

Hello everyone, I am Nare and in this video I am going to teach you how to get into the world of layers within digital art, plus extra tips on how I usually use them.

First of all, let's clarify the most obvious, what are layers in digital? I like to relate it to blocks, the order of each block will depend a lot on what is shown on the canvas, for example, generally the outline or lineart is done on one layer and this will always be above another Layer that is the color layer as you see in the example, if we put the color layer on top, it will be superimposed on top of the lineart, so that is why it is very important to know how to organize them well.

Layer types

Now within the program we are going to see many options with the layers, we will begin by explaining the ones at the bottom.

We have two different types of layers:

The raster layer or normal layer and the Vectors layer

Vector Layers

The vector layer is basically a layer that is ideal for drawing lines like in lineart and not for special effects or painting.

The strokes that we make in this layer will be mathematically processed by the computer and thus a stroke with control points will be generated, if we go to the object and select the stroke, we will see that some control points will be generated that They will be able to be manipulated for the user, we can do many things with vector layers such as making the stroke wider, redrawing it, connecting lineart and more.

Rasterized Cover

Continuing, the raster layer is composed of pixels and the lines that we make will not be processed or control points will be created on them, the two main differences of these two is that with one we can manipulate the lines and that also not it will lose quality when modified while the other will

So the normal layer is good to use with effects, color and extras while the vector layer is good for making lineart.

Opacity

To the layers we can also adjust the opacity, that is, its transparency.

Coloring layers

We can also change the color of the content within the layer, by default it is blue because it is usually used for the comic type sketch and then inking, but we can still slide in the options and choose the one we like the most.

and as you know, we can eliminate them with the garbage can as many times as we want.

Show layers in 2 panels

When we click it, it opens as a division with the same layers that we have, this in cases where we have many many layers we will be able to take advantage of the tool, being able to go from one layer to another easily.

Folders

The following are folders, folders are key for when we want to have an organization and not have the problem of creating a million layers and not knowing where everything is, the idea is that you create layers and put them in the folders by selecting them and dragging them, for example, we can put all the layers that we made of the outlined in one, then the color in another and so on.

You can also help yourself with the colors, if you want to color a folder or a special layer, just click where it is a gray square and select a default color or choose your own color, or the easiest and fastest thing is without clicking you put your mouse over the square and scrolle with the wheel and you are changing the colors wiiii.

Download bottom cover

It is precisely to pass the content of the layer that we have selected to the layer that is below it.

Match the bottom cover

It is to combine the top layer and the bottom layer into one layer.

Now in the sector tools above ...

adjust the bottom cover

What it does is draw inside what we have in the lower layer, that is, if I make a circle and then put that option for the layer above, everything I draw on it we will see only inside the circle, yes I deactivate it, those lines are no longer going to remain there, it is ideal for when we paint and we do not want any line to go out of place.

Reference layer

This means that the program when painting will take into account only that layer, as in this example it would be the lineart, if I do not establish the layer as a reference, what it will do is that it will take all of them equally and he will paint up to the stroke of all the layers,

And if it happens to you that you do not fill in everything as in the example, check if the "Multiple reference" option is marked in the properties of your cube and then click on the same reference icon.

Set layer as sketch

As it says, we are going to mark that layer as a sketch and the difference it makes is that when we paint it, the sketch will not influence the layer that we want to fill and it will not be seen when we export the final piece, very useful.

We continue with the padlock, as in every application it simply blocks one or more layers so that we cannot make any changes to them, this is very useful so as not to get confused about layers and not be drawing in one that was not, a perfect example is when we do the lineart on the same sketch layer, IT HAPPENED TO ME.

Lock transparent pixels

Let's say the same function of "Adjust to lower layer" that we just saw, but with the only difference is that here we will be able to fill or draw within the same layer and only in the stroke that we make in it, if we deactivate that fill It will not look like the previous one, but everything will remain in the same layer and then we will not be able to manipulate it.

A little bit of FUSION MODES

Let's say they are special effects that influence the colors of our layers, I am going to leave you a guide so that you can differentiate the different effects that they can give, you can try them and see which one gives you the result you want because I am not going to talk about All in this tutorial, but to highlight the three that I consider most important and the ones that I usually use, those are:

Multiplication

It takes the base color we have and darkens it according to the color we have chosen, we can use this mode for shading or to add textures.

Overlap

Superimpose the color that we select and it will change both the brightness and the saturation, I use this mode to give lights to my drawings and also to generate a contrast.

About exposing glitter

This mode is great for highlights or very bright special lighting effects.

Tone

What it does is change the base color without affecting its brightness or saturation, very useful to replace the colors of our drawing if it does not suit them.

And that's all for today's tutorial, as you can see it does not cover everything, but it does cover the essentials and necessary for a beginner level person who wants to start in this program!

I hope you have a beautiful day, see you!
