Easy method of light and shadow character
INTRO
Hi guy, welcome to D original ["Do you"],with Daniel.I will be illustrating the light expression and the techniques of expressing light.
But before we jump into that, let have a side lesson to know the different battles between light reflection and [dark]shadows.I will be using [clipstudio pro]to do this light illustration
Expression Of Light And Shadow
In a 3d display down below, here is a 3d circular ball Led by a soft light
The light is creating a division between light and shadow [both the dark reflection on the platform and also the grey expression on the ball]
For the light family and shadow
Also,if you look more closely you will see that both the light and shadow are express differently and those different express a known as [value],And that is what we are interested in knowing.
Below are the values of light
And here are some values of shadows
You can consider each of this family as a cohesive family,Who want to stick to themselves
Also, maintain a gap between the light and shadow for as you know light and darkness do not miss
[And notice that this gap also help clarify in your painting where each of the family lives]
And as we all know that light is easily capture by our eyes, which make it valid to give the light family more length than that of the shadow family
For the light family,
As for the implementation of the grey scale light value, this middle light also know as your [average value] which you can apply to you entire part of the light that covering this section of the 3d ball
Next in the average light is the brightest part of the light known as the [highlight value]
The highlight value is represented because of the light reflection on the object
And also, the part before the gap and the shadow values, this is where the form is starting to turn from the light ,this is called the [halftone value]
it is the darkest part of the light family[notice that even those the halftone value is dark than the other light family,it is not confuse for a shadow but live in the light family]
And that is it for the light family.
The shadow family,
Shadow value as you can see have to form[the dark reflection on the platform and the dark grey shadow on the ball]
And this because there are two different [base tone] the floor is darker and the ball is lighter
[Notice that theirs always a constant battle between the light and the dark]
Now the shadow on the 3d ball is called [form shadow]and is cause by the object turning away from the light
[form shadow]
While that of the platform is called [the cast shadow]and is occurs where the object is blocking the light from hit
[cast shadow]
Also what you should know is that a darker base tone will so have a darker shadow
And in the cast shadow the part underneath the object is called the [the embium occlusion] it's the deep pocket of shadows
And in the cast shadow the part underneath the object is called the [the embium occlusion] it's the deep pocket of shadows
[Embium occlusion]
Notice that this part of the shadow called [average shadow] and base shadow of the 3d is open to air and can allow the bounce of sky light, reflect light or embium light can find its way into that area and lighting it.
Reason why edges between light and shadow changes
For a round object
When soft light led on [round object]the edge between the light and shadow[form shadow] is softer [blurry]
Because of it round shape
While the shadow of the platform [cast shadow]is softer [blurry] as it go further away from the object
For a square object
As a light is led on a [square object] having a hard edge between the light and shadow [Form shadow]
Because of it square shape
if the edge is made a little curve around the edge, It becomes slightly softer[blurry]
but if it's more curvey,It will become more softer [blurry]
Now, coming back.
METHOD OF EXPRESSING LIGHT AND SHADOW ON CHARACTER
I will be showing you guys an easy method of expressing light and shadow using the already made character that is below
[For the purpose of minimize time consumption I won't be able to show how the draw and paint the flat base color of this character,Pls bear with me]
Open a new layer above the flat base color, use mask layer and mask the flat base color layer in order to design in background that doesn't affect the flat base color
[Masking]›use an eraser and erase the part where you don't want the pattern to touch which is the character
Make sure to show mask area,
Then apply background and make a border effect around the background and the image
USED MODE★
Normal layer
Darker color layer
Overlay layer
Hard light layer
THE SIDE LIGHTING EXPRESSION
First:before for jumping into it,let have a little side lesson on express the side lighting you need to bear in mind that your light is coming from the side
Now,create another layer [dark color], use a darker black color on one side of the character
Next, create a new layer [divide layer]
create another layer [hard light] also us a light yellow and apply it to the circle.
Next create another layer [normal]
Now create a new layer [overlay], apply a little yellow color softly to the background
Here's the finish work
THE DOWNWARD LIGHTING EXPRESSION
[Side lesson] ★When painting this, you should bear in mind that the lighting of this piece will be coming from down
Create a layer[darker color] which you are going to paint in the light family and shadow into the piece
Create another layer [divide] which will be use to add dimensions
Next, create another new layer [hard light] which is use to add hot yellow color to the shading to make it realistic
Now create a new layer [normal]and add a sphere to represent the light source
Finally create another new layer [overlay] which is use paint in the light ray into the background
Here's the finish work
BACKWARD LIGHTING EXPRESSION
Side lesson ★For this part of the paint is not that complicated because what you just need to know is that you will just be deal with one light value [average value] and two shadow value [cast shadow]&[Form shadow]
First we start by creating a layer[darker color]which similar to those above is use to add shadow to the paint
Now create another new layer [hard light] which is use for painting in the sphere representing the light source
Finally create a new layer [overlay]to add the light ray into the background
Here's the finish work
UPWARD LIGHTING EXPRESSION
Side lesson ★In express this,I you need to bear in mind is that the light is coming and hit from above the character
Start by create new layer [darker color]use in add of shadows on the character
Next, create new layer [hard light]for the adding of warm yellow to make the character feel alive
Now, create another layer [normal]and paint in a sphere to represent the light source
Next, create another layer [hard light] to paint in the highlight
Next,Create another layer [overlay]and paint in a soft light yellow to represent the light ray
Here's the finish work
WATER LIGHT DISPLACEMENT EXPRESSION
Side lesson ★when painting you should have in mind that under the water little light penetrates in and also the water gives of it own reflection of light
First, create two layer [normal & overlay]for the editing of the water like expression into the background
Next, create a new layer [darker color]for the implementation of the shadows
Following that,Create another layer [overlay 2]to add a blue light reflection on the neck of the character
Now,Create another layer [hard light] use for paint in highlight on the character
Next,Create a new layer [overlay]use in edit the zig-zag light lines of water reflection on the character
Here's the finish work

CONCLUSION
Those are some of the ways I express light and shadow to my art piece and if you feel like editing the character some more here are some work of mine
There are so many way you can edit this work piece or your work piece go all out and "DO you"
