Painting with Digital watercolor, is that possible? Today I want to show you the process of how I painted this digital watercolor painting illustration. As an illustrator I have experience painting with watercolors but never on a computer or tablet.

Video Tutorial

Here I leave a video of my process and you can see the step by step. Hope you like!

Let us begin!

I will be painting on my iPad and I will be using Clip Studio Paint 3.0 in Simple mode. To activate simple mode, you must click on the Clip studio logo and then see the option Switch to Simple mode.

Sketch

This is the sketch we are going to paint today.

Brushes

I am going to use the brushes that are already installed in the application. Most of the brushes have the watercolor paper texture included.

Things you should take into account

When we paint with watercolors we must build opacity due to transparency.

I will be using Texture Blend to be able to mix the colors with each other.

I recommend working in layers. Each element will be on a separate layer so the colors don't affect the layer below.

We'll paint!

I'll start by giving a blue base and use the Watercolor wash brush to achieve the natural watercolor finish.

I'm going to apply the color without looking like a neat application and I'm going to use the round brush. I will apply the color in different areas to make it look more natural.

For those hard edges, I'll use the textured mix.

I also used the dry watercolor and splatter brush to make it look more natural and feel like an illustration made with watercolors.

One technique I used was to apply the color Wet on Wet. Of course we are talking about digital watercolors and we are not using water but we will imitate the technique by applying the same color several times but without applying pressure... light layers.

Use the same technique to apply both colors. Always reapplying the color but without applying pressure since we want to work with the transparency of watercolors.

I'll apply the purple color and then put the layer in multiply mode to darken the mother a little. Note: Adjust the bottom layer so that it only affects the mother layer. This is something you do when painting with watercolors, applying a light layer of color.

Now I'm going to apply the color in several applications to create that texture. Later I will delete the parts that do not go according to the original sketch.

I will be using only the round brush to achieve a better transition between two colors. By applying the color several times I will make the color more and more opaque and it will help me give volume.

For a better transition between colors, I recommend that when applying the color, do not apply too much pressure.

Also apply the same rule at the puppy's sleepover.

Use the round brush to add details to the wallpaper and the trick is to apply the most pressure to have the greatest color opacity. Also add more splashes to make it look more natural and have a watercolor finish,

Don't be scared!!Just deactivate the outline layer. I like how it looks and it even looks like it was painted with watercolors.

Now my favorite part, using the mechanical pencil I am going to outline certain parts of the illustration.
