HOW TO MAKE THE WATERCOLOR EFFECT
Hello again! In this tutorial I will explain how to create the watercolor effect in Clip Studio Paint, using the default Clip Studio tools, adding examples to make it easier to understand.
Let us begin!
1. Brushes
The brushes in this type of painting are important, since they give the essence of the style, there are a variety of watercolor techniques, depending on your tastes it is important to see what types of brushes there are and experiment with them to achieve the desired result.
In Clip Studio there are a variety of brushes in the program that it is a matter of trying them and seeing if they are to our liking, here is an example of them.
As you can see, when you pass the brushes again, the color becomes darker.
On the other hand, in Clip Studio Assets there are a variety of options that could suit your tastes, you can see them and try them, there are free and paid options.
Here is an example of them
Various textures and brushes come in this set.
These have greater opacity if you like results where it is not very noticeable when you paint on the first pass, they may be to your liking.
This official tutorial shows how to adjust the brushes to your liking, if you like you can read it.
Example
In my case, I like to draw the sketch with little intensity so that the colors stand out.
I gave color variation to the hair and skin.
The last layer is in multiplication mode to give it more vibrant tones.
2. Texture
The texture in this type of techniques is important to give it a unique touch, depending on what we want to show, in Clip Studio we can create it and add it to the canvas or we can add it from the predetermined materials.
We can also download it from Clip Studio Assets where there are still a variety of options.
Examples
(In example 1 you can see that the finish is smoother and the number 2 as if it were on paper)
(Example with color)
To place it, it is important to put the layer in the blending mode [Overlay]
(The texture layer goes to the top and the entire process or the other layers go to the bottom)
It is important to emphasize that some brushes, although I think most have texture, it is good to set aside a texture on the canvas to give a plus to the illustration.
(This is the one I used in several examples)
Example
In this case I did not put the texture in [Overlay] mode since I want it to look like real paper
We add color
And we put details
3. Multiplication Mode
The Multiplication mode is important if we want to make the work easier and do it in less time. If you like to do it manually, it is not necessary to use it since it is only to add the shadows or the second pass and make a color darker so to speak and add details.
Example
In the brushes section you may have noticed that some brushes already have that function so it is not necessary to do this if you use it in a way that works and looks good in the illustration.
Example
Shadows
In this case I put the light with a lighter color first.
This is a good example where we can set the multiplication mode for the shadows of the sheet, varying the colors and it doesn't look strange.
4. Light in watercolor
To represent the light or bright spots in an illustration, the base color of the canvas is used, which in that case would be white. If we watch videos of how some people paint, we can notice that the light or the brightest spots are made without painting those places. that they want to highlight.
Example
Sketch
We leave the space where the light will be
With the Multiplication mode we put purple and pink colors to make it look more vibrant
With brushes that have greater opacity we add touches of yellow to make it look more realistic
other
In this example we can see that it is possible to make the light effect with a light base color
We just add a darker one and leave the spaces where there will be light
and details
5. Blend
In watercolor, as you work with water, the paint tends to blur or become less clear on the canvas, so there are different ways to mix colors. In digital there are tools that help us blur according to what we are looking for.
Number 2 is from Clip Studio and number 1 is from Assets.
“Textured Blend” is the program's default setting for watercolor.
Example
To be able to mix the colors where the shadows go, we use the blending brushes like this:
In this case we have this sketch
In the end I tried to remove the lines from the sketch so that it looked different, I blended it very well so that the hair and eyes stood out.
6. Examples
Example 1
(Here I defined the light points)
I put the blush and hair shadow colors in Multiply mode
Add a color to the background and add details.
Example 2
Final result
All details are in Multiplication mode
Add color to the house evenly
Final example
Same here is the same color in Multiplication mode
Final
I appreciate that you have read until the end, I hope it will be helpful to you when making illustrations of this type, a tip to improve is that it is good to watch reference videos of people painting in traditional and see their techniques, how they use colors, layers , etc.
Thank you and until next time.
