How to draw nostalgic scenery and landscapes in CSP
Hello! In this tutorial I will show you how you can draw inspiring and atmospheric nostalgic scenery and landscapes (these tips will work both for rooms and for nature). We will talk about different tips and tricks to make the viewer fill the powerful mood of our artwork.
Here you can see my video about it:
1. Interaction with the character
The first point is interaction with the character. Your character or other living creatures can make the main impression in the scene and complete the picture. And it will depend on how you draw them. I divide the character's interaction with the surrounding world into two categories: physical and emotional.
For example, you have a simple room in your drawing. And characters like this. You see that the character does not interact with the environment at all, and this makes the environment not very important and interesting. Now let's see how you can draw a character to emphasize the environment.
Emotional interaction
To draw the emotional interaction of the character with everything else in the picture, we add emotions and feelings. After all, we are painting a nostalgic picture, remember, so the surrounding world will evoke certain feelings in the character, which must be painted. So the viewer will understand that the surrounding world is not simple, but important.
Physical interaction
To draw a character's physical interaction with the objects in the picture, you need to draw how the character touches the objects. You can also combine emotional and physical interaction, and this will only add power to your art. Draw, for example, how a character touches a mug or a book that seems like an old acquaintance and evokes a sense of nostalgia. The character looks at the object and thinks.
2. Magic stuff in the air
But what should we do after drawing a character? There are so many other ways to show nostalgia, let me tell you about magic stuff in the air. I mean drawing different bubbles, stars or shining pollen. These incredible little details can make a picture even more special and add the right mood of nostalgia. In Clip Studio Paint you can make your own brushes for this or use my brushes (absolutely free).

Just create new layers into Add (Glow) or Color dodge mode and draw. You can use the Liquify tool for bubbles to make the scene more dynamic.
3. Retro film effects
Now let's talk about another very powerful thing for the nostalgic mood of the scene. In Clip Studio Paint you can find amazing vintage or retro filters. This feature became available in CSP version 3.0. To use it, export your art to a photo library and import above all the layers. Then rasterize it and click on Filter, Effect, Retro film… Here you can see a new window with so many kinds of filters for your scene. This vintage looks makes big improvements for nostalgic scenes. Something like old retro past time. You can change types and values of this effect. It means a lot of different choices of color, warmth, noises and all this retro stuff. Perfect opportunity for a nostalgic environment.
