Drawing rocks, grass and clouds in Clip Studio Paint

Hello! In this tutorial I will show you how to draw rocks, grass and clouds for your natural scenery art in Clip Studio Paint.

See the whole painting process here:

Rocks

1. Sketch

So, let’s start drawing rocks. The rock itself is not smooth, it has many faces and edges. When you paint rocks, add details and chips, scuffs, and additional blocks of rock to make it look like rock as much as possible. Draw a sketch.

2. Main color

Then create a new layer below the sketch layer and fill the stone with color with the Lasso Sub Tool. Please note that the rock can be of different colors.

3. Basic shadow

We continue to draw stone using Lasso Sub Tool. Let's draw a basic shadow. Pick the color of the current rock and carefully go down the color palette into a cold shade. Don't be afraid to make this shade contrast with the main color of the rock.

4. Additional shadow

When you finish drawing the main shadow, it's time to draw an additional, not so powerful one. Just choose a color that is darker and cooler than the color of the rock, but not the same as the main shadow.

5. Edges

Merge down all the layers with rocks except the sketch (make this one more invisible). We begin to draw the edges of the rock. Those edges of the rock that protrude are lighter and more exposed to corrosion and wind. So choose a lighter color and draw these details. And those parts that enter the depth of the stone, draw in a dark color.

6. Multiply effect

Let's add some effects and volume to the picture. Take the blue color and create a new layer in Multiply mode. Now, with the Soft Brush, draw a shadow at the bottom that fades upwards.

7. Glow dodge effect

Take the yellow color and create a new layer in Glow dodge mode. With the Soft Brush, draw a light at the top that fades down.

8. Details and cracks

To make the rock more interesting, add cracks on it. Take a darker color for the place where the crack will be and draw it. And then choose a lighter color and show the edges of the crack.

Grass

Time to paint the grass. We will draw two options - a lot of grass in the distance and a few blades of grass nearby.

1. Shape

First of all we need to draw this ellipse shape where the grass grows.

2. First blades

Then draw the first blades of the grass with the same color.

3. Contrasts

After that, it's time to add new colors and contrasts to the grass. Because that's how you can see that grass is grass.

4. More details

Draw more and more grass and details until it looks great.

5. Grass crowns

Look now where the grass is growing from. A flat ellipse doesn't look very natural, but you and I will draw the crowns of grass and everything will be perfect.

6. Multiply effect

Create a new layer in Multiply mode and with a Soft brush draw some gradients.

7. Glow dodge, Overlay

Play with different light effects. You can make grass more saturated and bright with Glow dodge and Overlay layers and yellow color.

Grass close-up

Here we have drawn a lot of grass from afar, and now we will draw the grass close-up.

1. Sketch

Draw a sketch of a blade of grass. These are fast lines and pointed shapes. Some blades of grass can even bend and it will look cute.

2. Main color

Create a new layer below the sketch and fill it with the main color of the grass with the Lasso Tool. When grass is close-up, I recommend creating a new layer for each blade of grass.

3. Basic shadows

Draw a shadow for each blade of grass with a darker and cooler color.

4. Multiply effect

Then you can merge all the layers of the grass and create a new layer in Multiply mode clipped to it. Draw a soft shadow with a Soft brush.

5. Add (Glow) effect

Create a new layer in Add (Glow) mode and draw light with a Soft brush too.

6. Details

Draw texture and the thickness of the blades of grass.

Clouds

Let's draw clouds. Even two. One cloud in the daytime sky, another in the evening sky.

1. Shape

Find a selection pen and fill the main shapes of the clouds.

2. Shadow

Let's draw a shadow on the clouds. Create a new layer attached to the main layer and start drawing rounded shadows.

Day

Evening

3. Light effects

Use Glow dodge and Add (Glow) layers to make beautiful light effects with a Soft brush.

Yes! We draw it, great!
