Complete illustration Step by step
Here is the illustration I made for this tutorial.
I will show you step by step the construction of this illustration as well as the different brushes used to make it.
I also used the time laps function of Clip Studio Paint.
-First, I made a very rough sketch to put my idea.
-Next, I pushed my sketch a little more.
I inked my drawing.
And I put each solid color on a separate layer.
For the line, I mainly use textured brushes.
I do different line thicknesses on my line. (full and loose)
the brush below:
Fur
For the fur, I use a brush specially designed for this purpose. I use different shades of brown and layer the brush strokes.
I used the brush below:
Here is the result obtained for the fur, as said above, I used three different shades of brown and two layers in addition to my solid color. For the second layer, I used an orange Airbrush on the left, the light coming from there allowing to soften my colors and to give a certain uniqueness to the work. I will repeat this maneuver on other solid areas.
The skin
For the skin, I started with a watercolor brush.
You can see in the blue frame on the right that the edges are blurry and when using two colors, they blend very slightly.
I used the brush below:
To tone down some of my features, I used another brush.
Below
Here is the result, I used two layers in addition to my solid color. I show you the color palette obtained to make my skin as well as the two main brushes used to make the skin.
I also used a pre-installed brush (Plume G) in clip studio paint to give depth to my skin with blue on a layer in product mode.
Hair
For the hair, I used the Skyfox brush, it allows you to layer colors and make interesting shades.
below :
I then used a watercolor brush with a lighter shade.
Below :
I ended up using the first brush with a lighter shade on a layer in shine density mode to give the hair some shine. (the light comes from the left.)
Below :
Here is the result obtained for the hair. I used three layers in addition to my solid. The first layer allowed to put the shadows, the second in brightness density mode allowed to put areas of light and for the third, I used orange with the shadow airbrush tool to soften my colors and allow to have a certain consistency with the rest of the colors in my illustration.
The color palette is in cool tones and I mainly used these two brushes.
Clothing
For the clothes, I used two brushes alternately. I first used a brush made by Clip Studio Paint, the Pen to mark the shadows, then I softened in some places with a watercolor brush. You can see the effect obtained with the two brushes on the third circle in the blue rectangle.
Below :
I used this technique for the sweater, the socks as well as the scarf of the young girl.
For the different elements, I used two layers in addition to the solid.
My color palette is mostly shades of brown and I used two brushes alternately to achieve this effect.
Shorts and clouds
For the Shorts and the clouds, I started by using a watercolor brush.
Below :
I then softened my features with the Watercolor Blur brush. (see blue rectangle for the effect obtained with the two brushes)
Below :
Here is the result. I used the same technique to make the clouds. The color scheme contains browns for the shorts and gray for the clouds.
I used two layers in addition to my solid and two alternating brushes.
Wind
To make the effect of a mist / wind coming out of the character's mouth and onto the flowers, I used the shadow airbrush on a layer in glow density mode.
I then gave a little effect, by using a textured mixer.
Below :
contour
To highlight the character in the background, I decided to put a white outline around my character, I used the G pen (over all the layers)
Below :
Textures and gradients
Now I am going to harmonize my colors. I use a gradient that I put on a layer in 44% overlay mode. The layer must be on top of all the others.
Below :
I add a texture that I put on a layer in 33% overlay mode.
Below.
I find the color too bluish, so I decide to change the shade.
To do so, I go to:
-editing
-color correction
- hue / saturation / brightness
-I put a more orange color.
I flatten all my layers to make one.
Then I go to:
-Layer
-New correction layer
-Posterization
I put the posterization in 16. It will give me a little extra effect.
Here is the finished illustration.
Different colorization with two brushes
On my previous illustration, I used a lot of different brushes, but you don't have to use a lot of them to make a nice illustration or colorization.
On the two chibis below, I used two to three brushes.
Depending on the brushes used, you can have very different results.
On the first colorization, I only used the G nib, the blender and a floral brush to do the entire illustration.
On the second colorization, I wanted to do a semi-painting, I used only two watercolor brushes.
Below are various flower brushes.
Below are the watercolor brushes used on the second colorization.
And a few star brushes that I regularly use in my cute illustrations.
I hope this tutorial has been able to help you and give you ideas for your next illustrations. I wish you a very happy new year.
