hello and welcome to this new tutorial. In this tutorial I will give you some tips for making clothes, using patterns and textures for your fabrics and many other tools that will allow you to dress your characters in fashion. Good reading.

Poses

Here are some tips for posing pretty for your characters.

In magazine photos, most models are not still in front of the lens.

Here are a few quick tips:

-avoid symmetries.

  • raise your character's head.

  • avoid placing your arms against your body, bend them so as to form triangles (orange).

  • also try to give movement to your character, make him jump, play with his hair ....

Below are some ideas for poses inspired by photographs.

Your best ally is to take inspiration from magazine photos or go to Pinterest.

For the second poses, I used the Clip studio Paint mannequin, I modified her measurements a little, lengthening her arms and legs as well as her neck to give a much more slender appearance.

Textures and patterns

In fashion, the first thing I think of are fabrics.

To have beautiful textures and patterns on my designs, I took pictures of some patterns and fabrics in my wardrobe to use them as textures and patterns on my designs.

The first textures are my photos, the second are patterns found on Clip studio Paint and others that can be downloaded from the clip studio Assets.

As you can see you can use your photos, textures and patterns on your designs, here I decided to use them as tie patterns.

But you can use them as a pattern for sweaters, for a texture of pants or even a hat.

I have attached a small tutorial to use your photos as a Pattern below.

Import your photos, to do:

  • go to file, import.

-then choose the space where your photo is. For my part it was in the photo library, so I selected this storage space.

The photo taken is from pajama pants and shows green plants on a blue background.

After you have uploaded your photo.

-click on your image present in the layers and drag it into your materials.

-Then double-click on the image in the materials, a new page linked to its characteristics appears.

-select "use for the brush tip shape" or as "paper texture" depending on the use you want to make of it

-On my side I have enabled the tiling and I have set the tiling property to "reverse" but you can choose other settings according to your preferences.

Our new pattern is ready to use.

You can follow the tutorial below, it is much more complete in its explanations and gives valuable advice.

More

To draw the folds, you have to understand the movement of the fabric, to practice, I invite you to take pictures of your sheets, your sweaters and observe how the folds of your clothes are formed thanks to a mirror or by taking a selfie.

A sweater can be broken down into various rectangles.

Folds can be represented by oblique, long or short lines depending on the stretch of the fabric and the weight of the fabric.

The folds will be much more present during a movement, for example when the arms or the trunk are bent.

In addition to the lines, you can represent some more complex folds with small triangles.

The bottom of a sweater will be wider for girls to pass the hips, do not hesitate to mark the waist by making a slight curve.

Here are some examples of folds with various ups and movements. As you can see the folds are much more pronounced and numerous when a limb is bent.

When you look at a garment from a top point of view, the curves will be downwards

And the reverse will be done when the garment is viewed from the bottom.

Different models of skirts

There are a very large number of forms of skirts. Personally before you start drawing a skirt, I advise you to draw the body of your naked character and start by making very rudimentary shapes.

When you have finished your shapes, you can do the details of your garment and make it more intricate. Remember to clear your legs when you're done.

When your sketch is finished, you can clean up your creation and even color it.

Below: a small tutorial with 3 steps to create movement effects in your fabrics.

Clip studio Paint has lots of tools that can help you create clothes, including ribbons.

Below are some ribbons present in your software or that you can download from the clip studio Assets

When you draw clothes above the breasts, pay attention to the folds, we do not surround the breasts with lines.

Always think about the movements of your fabrics and understand how the fabric is positioned.

for more realism, do not hesitate to draw the seams on your clothes such as jeans or t-shirts.

I have prepared for you a selection of three ribbons that I really appreciate

The shoes

My pet peeve is the shoes, I have a lot of trouble making them but thanks to Clip studio paint, you can download various models of shoes in 3D, it allows you to draw them from all different points of view and angles.

I use them regularly on 3D character models. These models have already saved me several times when I had to make a complex angle on my manga boards.

Characters

In fashion, we almost always see the same body types. Personally I find it sad. I find all bodies beautiful and I find that all morphologies, skin colors, disabilities and physical particularities are entitled to visibility, so in my drawings I regularly draw this diversity.

Fashion is not only reserved for one category of people.

I often start by drawing the naked body, it is then easier to be able to correctly draw the clothes and their folds.

Then, on another layer, I add the clothes on top.

I then put my sketch clean and add certain elements such as jewelry, stripes, pockets etc ...

Remember to erase the body lines under your clothes.

Then just color our designs and start over as many designs as you want.

Do not hesitate to play with colors, to use a strong color in your fashion designs.

Clothing styles

If you are making a story, feel free to think about the context, time, and world your characters will develop in.

Your characters will not be dressed in the same way if they are for example in a medieval world or in a current urban universe.

As you can see, the colors, the way my characters are dressed is very different and you can easily understand in what contexts or stories they could develop.

Thank you all for following this tutorial. I hope he gave you ideas for your next works.
