How to create magical effects
Introduction
Has it ever happened to you that you have a character in mind and it turns out that he is an incredible magician but it does not occur or do you know how to create that magic? Well with this tutorial I hope to help you a little bit to take ideas or create magic from scratch in a few simple and fun steps.
So let's get to it!
Creation of a magic orb step by step
We will start with the creation of the object, a simple doodle will help us to start.
(the lines that I have marked in red are a simple guide to know where I am going to shade to give texture and volume)
The colors on the left will be what adds depth to our magic orb. Enjoy scribbling lines back and forth on our magnificent orb until you achieve a result somewhat similar to this:
Now we will start with something very fun which is adding light. With the soft airbrush tool we will create a sphere after the orb with a color similar to the one we used as a base. In this layer we will use the color dodge mask. Then we will create another layer above our drawing and apply with the same tool above the orb a slightly lighter color than the one we used as a base. In this layer we will activate the overexpose brightness mode, remaining such that it is like this.
In both layers we will modify the opacity to our liking.
Now we will begin to make rays to our orb to give it dynamism. The most important thing about this step is that you do them as much as you have fun and that they are as natural as possible. We will also apply the dodge shine function to this new layer. We will adjust the opacity to our liking.
Finally we will have fun adding little touches with the spray and droplets airbrush tools and some other effects such as lines around it etc. The most important thing about this step is to have fun and play with the '' gloss '' and '' overexpose gloss '' layer settings until you get the finish that you like the most. Experiment with it and create the effect that you like the most. My final example is this.
I have decided to add a couple more examples of how to create magical effects on objects following the same procedure that I have already explained and using the basic tools of the software to create dynamic and effective effects.
Adding magical creations to works
Now that we know how to create orbs and magic objects, we will see how to incorporate them into our works. I will use this sketch of an elf magician to explain it.
To begin, we will add the orb with all the steps already mentioned above and we will begin to look at which areas will be the ones that we are going to illuminate with the same tone that we have used as a base for our magic orb since it gives off its own light.
The areas that I have marked in red will be those affected by light.
Now that we have determined the areas that our magic will illuminate, we begin to paint with the opaque watercolor brush of the base color of the orb on a layer that we will blur and create a new layer. We will again use the overexpose layer option to highlight the lights more. We will modify the lights to our liking until they are pronounced but soft. Leaving something like that.
To make our lights stand out even more and find that bright effect, we will create a layer above the lineart but below all of those in which we have created the orb and lights effects. In that layer we will use the gradient tool from foreground to transparent and we will choose a dark bluish color. When applying it we will select the multiplication layer option.
Finally we add a background to our liking and details so that the composition is as magical as possible and we will have it ready!
Enjoy your finished completely magical drawing! I hope you liked it and if it has been useful or there is something I can help you with, do not hesitate to write a comment. I hope it helps you and that you have a lot of fun creating magic with your hands!
