How to draw hair

When drawing hair, I do three things: base, sketch, line. It is necessary to observe references and work with strands instead of working thread by thread.

Basis

I made 5 heads to draw some types of hair.

When selecting a reference you should try to look at the shape of the hair and think about it geometrically.

Brush

I use the same brush throughout the entire process. The G-pen brush that comes with Clip Studio Paint. Sometimes I also use the air brush.

Form

To make the hair shape, I first look at the hair type (straight, wavy, curly, curly and their variations). Then I shape it by making strands that follow the movement of the hair.

In this phase I'm adding details and giving movement to the locks.

lineart

Using the same brush, I'm making the contour and giving freedom and movement little by little.

Note that I don't close the lines, I follow the movement.

Be patient at this point and redo the lines every time you don't like the result.

The secret is to work on the movement and shape of each hair type. Above are some examples of hair.

Base color

I usually use three colors to dye my hair. A base color, a more saturated and darker color, and a lighter shade. That alone is enough. One color is for shading and the other is for creating the lights. With the base color, I dye all the hair.

I outline all the hair and then with the lasso tool I select and color all the hair.

Light and shadow

With the dark color I'll pass the brush along the same lines of the strands of the locks that we made.

After placing all the shadows, I apply the gaussian blur effect. Filter - Blur - Gaussian blur

With the lightest color, I apply it to the highlighted parts of the hair.

And the hair looks like this!

All other hair types follow the same principle. Below are the other finished models.

Hope you like the tutorial! To the next.
