Zall

Hello, my name is Zall, and I am an illustrator from Indonesia. In this post, I'd like to share some tips on How to Design character with the anthropomorphism Method.

First, let's define what anthropomorphism is. Anthropomorphism is Basically just giving the Human trait into non-human object like Mickey Mouse, Tom & Jerry, etc.

And when i creating anthropomorphic character i do:

Determine the initial ideas

The initial step in creating a character design is selecting your main idea. This is a general concept that serves as a guide to giving you better picture of the concept that you want to make.

For instance, my main idea for this design is "a Little Girl with the Lavender gun in a happy mood".

Also, it's important to remember that there are no limits or silly ideas. Simply express your ideas freely because they might be useful later in the future.

Collecting References

Once you Have the idea for your character, the next step is to gather the references.

You can collect reference anywhere from Real life, Instagram, Google, Pinterest, Art station and more, I personally use Pinterest most of the time.

And if you're having difficulty finding the ideas, try to find some reference images first, because it's also can help you visualize what kind concept you want to make you can also use other artist work for reference.

Just remember, the reference images you choose should be able to fulfill or visualize your initial ideas so you will have better visual for your concept character.

Sketches and Thumbnails

In this stage you can start sketching and testing other ideas before moving on to the next stage.

Also make sure your sketch can represent your idea and cover the overall designs you want like Pose, maybe color, and composition. You can start with a rough sketch, or you can start with a clean sketch. Choose your preferred method.

And a little advice.

If you want to draw artwork with a background, I recommend you use a thumbnail. What is a thumbnail? Thumbnails are used to determine the composition of the artwork and also to determine the focal point, light-dark, far-close, size, etc.

After trying various ideas, I think this is good and I want to use it.

Time to Cook

After gathering the ingredients, it's time to cook them (´ ▽ `). Again, in this stage you can use any technique you are comfortable with.

You can also follow the process that I use:

Start with Sketch > Block the color and add Flat or Local Color >

Separate each part for easy to manage > Add Shading >

Adding some Details and do some fixes> Rendering > Final Adjustment.

Here's the step by step I do.
