How to DRAW HANDS | Using the 3D SHAPES
How's everyone! On this occasion you will learn how to draw hands in a simple way, using Clip Studio Paint, by taking advantage of references such as your own hands, as well as 3D figures.
What will we do to start?
First of all, it is important that we understand at first how our hands are made up. For this we can photograph them in order to understand them better.
I recommend taking more than one photograph with different poses, it will be very helpful to practice.
Get familiar with your hand | Learn to break it down
It is important that we learn to become familiar with what we are going to draw, in this case with our hands. But and how? Relax, for this we will follow a series of simple steps in order to "break it down".
We will begin by placing our reference photograph on the canvas where we will work.
1. Breaking down the hand. Palm
In order to "decompose" our hand, we must use geometric figures that allow for easier understanding. To begin with, we will begin by drawing a rectangle in the central area of our hand.
Our rectangle must be closed by a curved and outer line that closes the upper part.
It is also important to note that the rectangle that makes up our hand is characterized by being wider at the top, while it is shorter and thinner at the bottom. This due to its connection to the doll.
2. Breaking down the hand. thumb metacarpal
Now we will add a small triangle in the thumb area (scalene triangle) in order to represent the metacarpal of the thumb.
3. Breaking down the hand. knuckles
Now it's time to draw the knuckles. To do this, we will represent them with 4 circles, which we will place along the curve of our rectangle. Just as below
The reason for the circles as a way of representing the knuckles is necessary to be able to split later with the fingers.
4. Breaking down the hand. arch of fingers
Later, we will add an arc that will serve as a guide when defining the height of each of the fingers.
It is important to clarify that the arc is parallel to the curve of our rectangle.
The distance that must exist between the arc and the rectangle of the hand is proportional to the same size of the hand itself (without fingers).
5. Breaking down the hand. add fingers
Now we need to add one of the most important parts of the hand, the fingers.
For these, it is important to base the height of each one on the arch previously made, try to compare the width of the fingers with chips or sausages, it will be easier to understand it this way.
It is important to note that each of the fingers is composed of 3 phalanges (3 separations) are important to highlight, because thanks to these the movement between each of the fingers can be interpreted. Except for the thumb, which only has 2.
Inked and Colored
Now you can ink and color your hand model. To do this, you can hide the layer that includes your reference as well as the sketch (once the inking is finished). A large part of the final result falls on the finishes, so it is important to carry out a good inking as well as a full coloring of lights and shadows that can allow a better perception of the volumes.
At the time of inking details can be added such as the folds that exist between the knuckles and the skin, as well as the nails, which do not necessarily have to be drawn closed, it is possible to represent them with curves.
Eventually we can repeat the exercise with different poses in order to reinforce what has been learned and achieve greater ease over time.
Figures 3D
Now that you know how to draw hands in the conventional way, it's time to get down to work and explore the features that Clip Studio Paint offers for a better understanding and ease when drawing hands.
We will easily explore the 3D material.
We will enter the "Material: Pose" panel located in the vertical section of materials located on the right side of our screen.
Now we choose some default pose of our preference and drag it to our canvas.
Once the figure is preloaded on our canvas, I recommend that you become familiar with it, it is important that you learn to manipulate it (it is too simple).
I recommend playing with her and trying to imitate any pose that comes to mind.
hand scanner
This same tool allows us to use an additional hand scanner to our own photographs to use them as a reference on our 3D model, so it is very useful if you have problems with the manipulation of the model at first or even if you just want to use this function comfortably.
This function is found in the options panel that appears below our model.
And with the help of a simple photo, we can achieve a very functional interaction with the 3D model, which can be very useful for us.
Work on the 3D model
Once we choose a pose that catches our attention, it is time to work on what we have learned previously and apply it in this last exercise.
We will lower the opacity of the 3D layer to be able to work comfortably.
We will decompose the hand with the previously applied method (we will make the sketch)
Now is the time to ink our hand. We can also hide the 3D layer once we no longer need it.
And finally, we will add color, considering lights and shadows in order to provide volumes.
And ready! This is how we can draw hands in a simple way and using the tools and materials that Clip Studio Paint offers in a diverse way. Remember that everything is a matter of practice, in the end you will achieve the results you want because... In the end, everything will be fine and if it is not fine it is because you have not reached the end yet.
Thank you very much for watching this tutorial! see you ;D
