Tips of the Month

Thank you for your posts!

Out of the Tips posted between April 23 - May 24, the writers of the following will be rewarded a cash prize or GOLD!

This month marks our first “Tips of the Month.” For the #TraditionalStyle theme, most of the posted Tips were on watercolor, proving the popularity of watercolor style coloring. In contrast, #ConceptArt submission topics were widely varied, ranged from efficient workflows to perspective rulers. While we didn't see many Tips on the #CommercialDesign theme, all entries were very unique. The submission period for the next Tips of the Month starts at the end of May. We have multiple winners every month, so don’t be shy and share your best art tips!

Gold Award

US$700
  1. This highly detailed Tips covers the entire coloring process of line art! Each step includes effective time savers and techniques, allowing the reader to learn various topics organically. We think many artists will especially benefit from the easy to understand highlight and shadow painting process.
  2. This Tips carefully covers how to use textures, a crucial part of drawing anything in a watercolor style. Textures and gradients were used to enhance the authenticity of the finished drawing, and the color coded layer palette was a good way of breaking up the tutorial into easy to understand sections.
  3. Three beautiful illustrations that would look great on any cafe menu are covered in this Tips. A total of 5 brushes are introduced to recreate watercolors and brushstrokes, each with their own section on settings, colors, and instructions. If you want to draw food or seasonal illustrations, look no further.
  4. A very unique entry, this Tips shows readers how to design playing cards using the symmetrical ruler in an innovative way. This tutorial teaches how to find the center point of the canvas to draw an illustration with line symmetry.

Silver Award

US$300
  1. Each step on how to digitally draw in a watercolor style is explained in depth. As this Tips introduces the reader to various functions and tools which are useful for creating a canvas, drawing line art, or coloring, we definitely recommend this to first-time digital watercolor artists!
  2. This Tips covers the process of importing line art to finishing a watercolor style illustration. Using a single brush, it introduces ideas to try out such as tips for mixing color and using the Colorize function to create organic color variations.
  3. Starting from an image, this “making of” shows us how to draw a fairy’s portrait. While the finished product looks like an analogue watercolor, the Tips covers various techniques unique to digital drawing such as layer blending modes, tonal correction, intermediate color palettes, and changing line color.
  4. The first half of this tutorial shows us how to create an original watercolor brush, with the second half explaining how to use the brush to finish a watercolor piece. Both parts are full of useful information when creating a watercolor piece, and will come in handy for many artists.
  5. The only oil paint style tutorial, this Tips carefully goes over easy to understand steps to create a tutorial for beginners. The character in the example is very cute as well, making the tutorial a nice invitation for beginners.
  6. With the positive message that you don’t need to create a masterpiece with every stroke, we could feel the writer’s love of drawing. The video covering the process of the drawing was a nice touch.
  7. This Tips introduces how to effectively add text to your work and how to finish up a cover page. We learned a lot of useful techniques such as how to add a logo and how to add various effects to text.
