Introduction

Hello and welcome to a new tip of Clip Studio Paint, dedicated to our creations and today I will explain about the Lo-Fi Art!

Capturing the essence of nostalgia and painting with the right colors is what we will see next with Clip Studio Paint. Starting step by step with the elaboration of the illustration and tips to take advantage of the software.

01 | Drafting the idea

Before creating an illustration, drafting the idea is the first thing to start with brainstorm ideas based on nostalgia or memories of our past era.

Starting with the main idea such as the boy in his room with his firefly, and then secondary ideas to give more atmosphere to the illustration, such as CRT television, video games, your first pet, music and comics.

02 | Thumbnailing / Ideation Sketch

''Thumbnailing'' is about to generate little and fast sketch and make group about these ideas to pass to detailing later.

Once the ideas are drafted it is time to create thumbnails to generate different poses, perspectives and actions for the illustration.

I have elaborated 3 sketch ideas, and one of them I chose the best candidate to elaborate the illustration. Drawing in detail the stars, an airplane, poster on the wall, the TV and the toys to be clear at the time of making the clean sketch.

03 | Perspective + Composition + 3D Materials

Create with the ''Perspective Rule'' to define the vanishing point and depth of the illustration.

We add the rule of thirds as a composition to give points of interest to the ideas. And we take advantage of the 3D materials of Clip Studio Paint, which offers the 3D primitives and the model of the character as an aid.

04 | Clean Sketch

To pass from clean, using a brush or ink to make clean drawings, fill in the contours of colors to make a good layout before going to inking. And from a folder we will have all the layers separated from the clean drawings.

05 | Inking and Values

In the next timelapse we'll see the process of inking!

You can choose your favorite brush of ink, this will serve to have and improve your own style in lo-fi art, in Clip Studio Paint offers you the default tools and when inking it gives the same feeling as drawing on traditional paper with pen or markers.

Now we fill with grayscale or values for the inked illustration, which will help later when coloring digitally. This is the timelapse of the process here.

06 | Coloring

For digital coloring, we will use one of Clip Studio Paint's functions called ''Intermediate color'' which will help us to generate new color references.

In this process:

1. Create a layer with blend mode ''Color'' and colorate all corners of the canvas until a good result is achieved.

2. Now another layer for Details colors, with blend mode ''Color'', and repaint all details and objects like, the poster, the TV, the character and the toys...

3. In a new layer, with blend mode ''Overlay'', accentuate the color until a good result is vibrance.

4. Now with a layer with blend mode ''Add (Glow'') add the softbrush the part of brilliance for the illustration!

5. Add the adjustment layer Curve and play with the curves of the four modes (RGB, Red, Green and Blue) to achieve the retro look.

07 | Extra: GIF Animation

To finish, I show you the tools of animation of Clip Studio Paint!

Now for to make the glow animated, create a new timeline of 24 second, in a layer renamed ''Light'' with softbrush of yellow color in the canvas, we activate the Keyframes layer and put the keyframes in mode Hold (color yellow). Now modify the opacity in each keyframe to generate the animation of glowing!

And this is the final result!

Conclusion

Once you have learned this, you can recreate the nostalgia with all the techniques offered by Clip Stuido Paint for digital illustrations, comics or fanzines or even micro-animations!

Thanks for getting here and I'm glad you read the tutorial and I hope it was useful and practical!

See you in the next tip of Clip Studio Paint!
