Fantasy fiction is a genre of fiction that involves elements that cannot exist within the real world. This fictional universe includes things like magic, a knight with a broadsword, a sorcerer, mythology, or life from other planets or galaxies.

Workspace

This is the setup of my workspace before I draw anything. On the left side is my drawing canvas (because I’m left-handed) on the right side is where I put my reference layer. Sometimes it feels a little too cramped up so I just press the tab button and all unnecessary tools are gone.

Source

Clip Studio Paint Assets and the Internet have all kinds of images and references that you could use for your fantasy art. Some of the assets in Clips Studio are free to download and some require you to use clippy tokens. Most of my sources came from the internet because most of them are free and I only use them just for pure reference and photobashing.

Drawing

Now that you’ve collected enough references for your fantasy art its now time to draw. I put them side by side my drawing canvas on the left and my references on the right. It is much easier to copy and get the proportions right this way.

By putting multiple images on your reference you can have more options to choose from. You can put them all in your piece or just simply pick one or two to make it simple.

Here I utilize one of Clip Studio Paint tools for the 3D drawing figure in my fantasy art.

I combine them with the images I got from the web I also use them as a reference I don’t trace over them although some people do that.

Photobashing

Photobashing is a technique that consists of using multiple digital assets like pictures, textures, and 3D models to create realistic-looking artwork. This is a technique sometimes I use to finish my digital art much faster. Just like the illustration above instead of drawing the whole background I copy and paste an image and tweak it a little to make a more believable fantasy scenery.
