Learn how to draw fur and knitwear!

Drawing Fur

all furs are darker at the root and get lighter at the tips of the hair fur.

So cover the areas of your outfit with fur with the darkest shade as a base color.

And then add hairlike strokes in the lightest shade of the color you want the fur to be.

all furs will have a natural parting that can be affected with gravity or wind. Here I put a natural parting down the center where all the hair strokes emanate from.

Style 1: Fur Coat without defined edges

Draw a basic sketch of the outfit.

Set the darkest shade as a base color in the total area of fur you want.

Determine the flow of your fur. In this case my fur falls downward and splays outward from its source to get a pouffier effect. Fur is usually manipulated this way in real outfits so that the grain of the furs are all cohesive in their direction.

Place the lightest values in the fur towards the direction of light in your piece.

the body of the coat will have shorter hair fur. It will appear cloud like in contrast.

The lightest values will be in the places with most access to light in the outfit.

where two pieces of fur fabric will meet, “at the seams” will be darkest. In the picture below its the vertical seams going up and down the coat torso.

Your fur is done rendering when there are no more hard edges in it.

Style 2: Fur coat with defined edges

Fur will have 2 flows:

Red arrows: Draw some of the spikes of your fur going against gravity and wrapping around your outfit.

Blue arrows: Because fur is weightless leave some areas sticking out, mainly where either gravity or a seam would make the hairs part.

After you have defined the edges of the silhoutte of the fur color it the same way as before mentioned.

In the image below I colored the fur with the light coming from the left of the coat.

Knitwear

Using my previous sketch I began by adding a fuzy texture to emulate yarn.

 

 

Then I added a braided pattern, that is simple to replicate throughout the coat. Steps to drawing the pattern below.

Draw these petal shapes on top of eachother to chain them together. Add a base color.

Add a highlight color that is only a few shades lighter than the base color closest to the direction of light. In this case to the left of my coat.

Then add shadows in the places where fabric forms an edge or casts a shadow.

the darkest values will go in the areas farthest from your light source. Or where fabric meets and no light can enter.
